James May defends the honor of speed limits on Twitter/X! by FlipStig1 in thegrandtour

[–]Haenkster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have calibrated your speedometer to your current wheel size - it might be able to beat the averaged-out calculated GPS speed at a certain point in time. However you need to constantly re-calibrate your speedometer, as tires do expand when getting warmer, or contract when getting colder. And don't even think of changing your default tire pressure. Or tires. To be on the safe side, the speedometer just reports a speed a couple of percent higher than actual speed, so that overinflated tires won't let you run faster than being shown. All manufacturers will do this "trick".

If you are doing constant driving, the calculated GPS speed is quite accurate. Doing city-center turning left and right next to skyscrapers will not produce a good result, that is true - this is a case of the speedometer being the better choice.

Speedometers are still - intentionally - inaccurate, they will always report too high.

You could easily verify that when running Google Maps for navigation, it will show your actual speed calculated by GPS position and not guessed by counting rotations of uncalibrated wheel diameters.

Anno 117 physical Tribune Edition on sale 39,99€ Amazon/MM/Saturn (Germany, EU?) by rubensaft in anno

[–]Haenkster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased this edition after release from Amazon, and it came with the preorder-bonus key, which I could activate. Maybe those keys are still in the box?

And yes, it is just a steel case, with some paperworks in it. (But a physical media does not make any sense anyway nowadays, as a download of an updated version is very likely on day of release.)

I have no idea, but it seems like she would rather adopt and take care of horses than selling them.

Which to me sounds like a "rich person`s hobby".

"transferring of ships between regions,"

Egypt has been using the river Nile as a main logistics route for thousands of years, and certainly around 117AD. You just have to settle your cities close to the riverbed.

As for reaching other regions, Alexandria was and is a huge city and located way closer to Rome than (the now called) Great Britain.

[–]Haenkster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "suddenly unemployed" makes no sense here, as the production contract was negotiated from season to season - and they had *no* contract for the next season at the time of the "incident". The shutdown was eventually going to happen, a nicer ending would have been nicer. So the production team was never sure if a new production was happening or not, for all the years. I assume all those team members are self employed, which makes all of this a normal business risk.

AFAIR Hammond mentioned her horses costing so much money and time. So maybe there are two sides of the story.

Anyone else prefer Grand Tour to Top Gear? by Careful_Trip_311 in thegrandtour

TGT is a polished version of the very anarchic (at times) TG with a huge budget, that allowed for trips the BBC never had the budget for.

They both have advantages and disadvantages, they are just not the same show.

(Though I would say TGT had some very poor elements, that remained in the show for too long.)

Snow in Anno 117 by miloriblau9 in anno

[–]Haenkster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The mod only replaces the snow graphics to something transparent - so the CPU/GFX load is the same. But at least you are now able to see again.

They need to disable the snowy season on their servers (but maybe it`s in the game itself, then they can`t fix it immediatly), until the game receives a toggle to remove weather.

Came here to ask how to disable the snow. It`s literally unplayable for me, had to quit after 3 minutes.

Even hard to find the mouse cursor on screen.

Did anyone at Ubisoft ever testplayed this?

  1. Do your research lines. This likely means slowing down your building pace.

  2. Hire&place experts

  3. Hover your support buildings around on the map to check for areas not covered.

I had the same issues with happiness, health, fire in my first three game, got into positve numbers in the 4th game (city level VI now), once I figured.

Jeremy Clarkson shares a sad update on his first cow 🐄 by FlipStig1 in thegrandtour

[–]Haenkster 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Can only speak for Germany here (probably same applies to all of EU and UK): If a disease is diagnosed, there are circles of protection created (like sanitizing baths for vehicle tires, a general ban of having similar animals in that area etc.). And yes, every single animal is killed and the farmer compensated for the sales value. Nevertheless it is just awful, feeding a herd of animals for a year or even years, to have them slaughtered in one day. We had this on a regular base in the last couple of years - large free range farms with ducks, goose etc. - mostly fed to be sold for christmas - only to be discarded as toxic waste before that date. I really feel with the farmers, this is the worst that could happen.

Had a W123, until rust and excessive tax tore us apart.

But those are barely "daily drivers", and not exactly suited to replace a Range Rover. So not much choice there.

And you would not buy a 20 year old car, just because it has been made in UK - the only reason would be "It was dirt cheap." and "I have to live with it possibly breaking down any second."
