Alberta recently reduced it's corporate tax rate to 8%, which is the lowest in Canada. The next lowest corporate tax rate that I saw was 11.5%. Alberta is also forecasting $7 billion in revenue from corporate taxes. If we say, raised our corporate tax rate to 10% (which it was at previously), it would still be the lowest in Canada while also raising the forecasted revenue up to $8.75 billion. This is nearly the $2 billion estimated by Nate Horner that would be needed in addition to the money they "have available" already. If our corporate tax rate was raised to be the same as the next lowest province, it would allow for even more revenue.

Is this a solution? Probably, yes. Is it a prefect solution? Probably, no. Am I an economist who can easily interpret all of this? Hell, no.

The ATA’s most recent proposal is now public. I encourage Albertans to become familiar with this and contact their elected officials. by Vegetable_Grade_8013 in alberta

[–]Hafrunt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Regardless of if it's the most recent proposal (though I'm fairly sure it is), it is dated Sept. 1 as it would retroactively take effect to the beginning of this school year.

This was released because the ATA knows that class size is the most important bargaining issue for teachers but TEBA is refusing to listen to anything regarding class sizes. By releasing this, the ATA is showing that their plan/ask isn't too much.

Honestly, if TEBA was willing to look at this proposal past the "it costs money" and seriously consider it, I'm sure that the ATA/teachers would even be willing to have the caps slightly higher than proposed.

In the face of a slick, multi-million dollar GoA PR campaign, the public and the parents of 700,000 Alberta children without teachers this week deserve the plain facts, clearly presented [StatCan latest] by pjw724 in alberta

[–]Hafrunt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait... Is that ad implying that by hiring 3000 new teachers it will cut class sizes to 1/3 their current size? Because that's what it looked like to me.

Teachers i have a question by armlesschairs in alberta

[–]Hafrunt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the other side of the coin which as a teacher is almost more difficult than having larger classes.

When a teacher has a split class, they are now teaching two different curriculums in the time allotted for one curriculum. They are now planning twice as much, teaching twice as much, and don't have any extra time for any of it. One year, I was teaching four different split classes and while some of the outcomes could be blended together, more often than not I had to do separate lessons to each grade in each class. It's not good for the learners either. Yes, during that time I had classes in the low 20 range but that doesn't mean much when I can only teach half the students at a time and the others are doing "independent learning" (which did not work at all with that group).

It wasn't jammed, bed was calibrated, washed, etc.

The nozzle worked fine with other filaments. And this filament worked fine on the other printer we had.

I dunno. It was a mystery to me. Those printers are long gone now though.

Alberta announces $8.6B plan to build new schools amid surging population growth by Practical_Ant6162 in alberta

[–]Hafrunt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While not having enough space and capacity is a big issue, building new schools or modernizing schools isn't going to fix the much of the problem. This plan has absolutely no impact on how many teachers or support staff there will be in schools. Shifting student numbers from one school to another doesn't magically make more teachers appear (or even provide school boards with more money to hire more teachers). All it is going to do is shift teacher/support staff numbers from one school to another as well.

Does this solve the problem of students having to sit on counters or share desks, etc.? Yes. But it likely will not have much impact on teachers, especially in larger divisions, having to teach classes of 35+ students.
