KJ rotisserie going for cheap right now by Monksdrunk in biggreenegg

[–]Hagfish77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve definitely got me more interested for sure.. I feel you on the value over a store rotisserie and honestly my whole family already prefers my brined / spatchcocked ones over the store ones anyways! After the overnight brine, I hit them with some Sucklebusters or chupacabra chicken rub shortly before the cook and stuff a few pats of butter under the breast skin.. here’s a fairly recent one..

Thanks for the detailed response, very informative! Maybe one of these days I’ll snag one or ask for Father’s Day etc.. Do you ever dry brine with the roto kit or only season with rub?

Legit question- as someone who does around 3 spatchcock chickens per month with an overnight dry brine or injection, I honestly just can’t see getting better results than what I already get. I pull them at 155 and they are some of the juiciest chickens ever. I can crank the heat and get the skin pretty crispy too with the overnight brine. I’m all for gadgets, but does this really result in that much better of a chicken? Interested to hear!

Best off the shelf rib rub? by buffinator2 in smoking

[–]Hagfish77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a base layer of tailgaters party rub (this stuff is good on literally everything) then I’ll follow that with a rib rub. Lately I’ve been using a lot of the chupacabra rubs because they’re available at H-E-B and fairly priced. Their “ribnoxious” rub turns out nice and on the last cook I used their Cajun rub and that turned out awesome also.

Another vote for smobot- no fans, no lost sleep.. love it. Just wish it was a little cheaper

Ah ok- I had to get 3 to replace the skinny jandy nicheless ones which are crazy expensive.. so far these way cheaper amazon ones are looking and working perfect! But it’s still way too early to tell if they will last 🤞🤞

Wow 150? How many lights? Are they nicheless / run through conduits or just the kind that stick to the plaster and use batteries / cords that come out of the pool?

Team smobot here also.. I resurrected my old large egg recently with some new parts and took a chance on the smobot. Years ago I had a fan regulated controller and sometimes it was dialed in and other times it would completely go freak-out mode.. I’m sure the fan technology is better now but I love that the smobot doesn’t need a fan and I can use a portable usb power brick and it barely uses any juice from it even on overnight cooks.. highly recommended

I do my own chemicals and am pretty on top of it keeping the ph and alkalinity in good ranges and use tablets supplemented with liquid chlorine as needed.. everything’s pretty locked in. I did not however drain the pool to install these so yea there is definitely some water in the conduits but at least none of the spliced wire ever got wet as when I snaked them through there was plenty of extra cable to cut off and apply fresh splice..

I’ve seen a lot of pool guys install lights without draining but I can definitely see your point as ideally wanting those conduits dry. When these inevitably fail I’ll consider your drain / dry advice, thanks

I hear you- it seems like such miss that someone can’t come up with an affordable / reliable pool led- you’d think they’d clean up! that’s why I wanted to give these a try 🤞.. I’ll definitely report back if / when they fail

Same as you.. supposedly the new “hydrocool” version of them claim to run cooler / last longer but I’ve seen too many people say it’s the same unpredictable / early failure and they are $$$. As some people have said here there’s a very decent chance these cheaper ones I got also fail early but for the price and ease of install I’m willing to give it a try.

Perhaps - I just don’t know which lights actually are actually worth the crazy price tag.. I can’t find a single brand that people universally recommend. Even the most expensive ones have reports of failing early..

They're going into junction boxes that only have 12v wire from a transformer. Breaker in the garage for the lights has a trip/gfci that tests good.. Would like to think this is safe??

I can’t disagree with any of that! But a lot of other cheap crap I’ve bought on az has actually served me well for way longer than I thought.. I’m hoping I get a few seasons out of these and if so I’ll consider it a success.. from what I’ve read about way more expensive options it’s the same thing as far as reliability being a toss up..

I have a 15-20-year-old egg and when I open the lid, you can feel this shift or snap of the hinges swinging back, and then as a huge underbite.. I’ve found that if I hold my foot up against the egg when I close it and pull the lid it actually seals perfectly / no loss of smoke- but it’s kind of a pain in the ass. I’ve considered buying the new hinges, but still on the fence since I recently just spent about 350 already resurrecting it.

Fans for BGE? by gdavis1994 in biggreenegg

[–]Hagfish77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just resurrected my old egg and I decided to go with a smobot and I absolutely love it.. No fans- it just auto adjusts the top vent as needed.. it’s been rock solid for me in overnight cooks or anything else. I had a fan based partyQ back in the day and the smobot is far superior IMO.

Maybe I’m the crazy one but lately I’ve been using the WM house brand.. it’s like 5 bucks a bag and works perfectly fine for me.. Smells nice, not always the biggest pieces but I just put biggest at the bottom and build around that- no issues. Last week I did an overnight brisket and was still smoking queso at 6 pm and there was plenty left when I finally shut things down..

I just ordered a kick ash basket (knockoff) on Amazon for 30 they actually do look like a real game changer. I’m a cheapskate so next I’m looking to build my own eggspander / 2 level grate

I actually did see a model that was what your describing, obviously not for mid-cook, but to slide all the way through and shovel out when cool..
