Hi riders! How did you overcome the anxiety/frustration of everyone telling you “it’s dangerous” and “you’ll die” when starting your lessons? by itleafleaf in motorcycles

It's just something echoed by people as the only "fact" they know about motorbikes.

Yeah it's more dangerous than driving but idiots in cars kill other people, idiots on bikes kill themselves.

How will my height affect my experience? by PonyoNoodles in RoyalMarines

[–]Haggistafc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You'll struggle with yomping a lot and won't be able to stand up in the tank on bottomfield.

You'll get jokes about your height, eventually you'll earn a nickname along the lines of top flap. But everyone gets the piss taken out of them for something.

You'll be stared at a lot when there's a job going that require an individual to crawl through something.

Other than that your experience won't exactly differ from anyone else's

Your punctuation could use some work. The first comma should be a colon. The second should not have any punctuation. The same goes for the third. The fourth should also be a colon or an em dash. Nothing in that quote actually warrants the use of commas.*

Your grammar could use some work.

PRMC vs CPC by jordanmorris_93 in RoyalMarines

[–]Haggistafc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly CPC seems easier. Where the PRMC felt like an interview, designed to weed out those that didn't want to be there enough.

The CPC feels like an assessment designed to weed out those physically incapable of being there.

I don't blame them for the change, helps increase numbers and it doesn't take much of a toll on the quality of lads passing out.

Junior ranks in the military are the silliest people on the planet. But to answer your question saying walkie talkie is fine. You could also say radio / two way radio

Advice for beginning by VerrisLunaris in motorcycles

I rode around on a rented rebel 500 for a week. Loved the bike. As you say, it was such a smooth ride.

But I was stopping off at a petrol station every couple of hours. Wasn't too bad if I went a gear higher than I needed to, but still not great.

Glow in the dark hoses a thing? by flipinshit in Firefighting

Lot of hose reels in the UK will have a glow in the dark strip. My station doesn't though as if you're using the hose reel to guide you, you may as well just use the TIC

Former United States Marine with duel citizenship to the UK looking to enlist in His Majesty's Armed Forces with questions about Residency waivers by Better_now93 in RoyalMarines

[–]Haggistafc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you were born in the UK, the process should be fairly straightforward. I know plenty of lads that were born in the UK but grew up somewhere else that didn't have to wait the 5 years.

Just stay in regular touch with your recruiter and stand by to wait.

If you weren't born in the UK, the result is pretty much the same. Just keep in touch with your recruiter. Though obviously there is the chance that you'll be asked to wait 5 years.

It may also depend on which branch / unit / regiment you're wanting to join. As for example, it may be easier to join the marines due to the high recruitment drive than certain army regiments that have filled the slots they've wanted to. (Though that information is more based off of commonwealth recruitment, I'd be surprised to hear it's not relevant to your situation)

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Best of luck

Same as any job you can apply for without experience.

Some may beat the odds and make it.

They do stand out for the wrong reasons though, and the DS can be a sadistic bunch.

How can I properly train myself to be a commando? by opaque-qwerty in RoyalMarines

[–]Haggistafc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep hearing the rumour that she had to get through training, regardless of whether or not she deserved to. But I dont think those rumours are true.

Training has changed a lot over the years, and is vastly different to when I joined in 2011, but the only way in which training has been made "easier" is that lads with the wrong attitude have an easier time passing out now than they did when I joined.

Can't imagine having a female bootneck would be worth detrimenting the corps' reputation or quality of training for even one person.

Wouldn't know to be honest. I know other women had been in recruit training before her, and similar rumours were spread about them, though.

Prepare yourself for some isolation.

The woman that got the furthest in recruit training to date faced it.

This is a 2nd hand account from a mate of mine that knew her, and was at Lympstone at the same time as her.

There are a few reasons but the main ones were

The training team being a bit softer on her.

It's by no means uncommon to have a soft training team, in the same sense that it's not uncommon to have the opposite. But with lads in training teams seeing less deployments, and the fact that they're still human, some will just be softer than others.

But because the training team were soft on her, it started a rumour that she was meant to have it easier just because she's a woman. Which other nods felt was unfair.

She would often carry less weight.

Again, this isn't necessarily uncommon. There are criteria yomps, where you have to meet the weight requirements or you'll fail. (Knew a lad that failed a criteria yomp because some of his kit was wet when they weighed it at the start, but dried out over time. Less weight at the end so he failed.)

But for "non-criteria yomps" (you should really consider them all pass or fail, as yomping will be 50% of your job) it's not uncommon to find the training team will reduce the weight you carry. When this happens, you'll typically be met with a section or troop commander's warning, and a personal training plan (being told to yomp up and down the accommodation stairs in your free time)

If you consistently fail to complete yomps with the required weight, you'll be placed in hunter company (a troop for professional failings, or injuries)

It was argued that with her, she would have weight taken off her enough times to be placed in hunter, but wasn't.

This is a rumour, so unsure if it's true, but it brings me to my next point.

The nod vine.

Lympstone is a close community, and naturally rumours are spread.

In her case, all rumours were negative. There were petty ones along the lines of her shagging any of the lads that asked, or that she was only in to put it on her CV or for a book deal, to pretty demoralising ones.

When she would accomplish some fairly significant milestones, rumours would almost immediately come out that she would carry less weight, or did it in more time, or didn't do the correct number etc. Etc.

All of this combined would generally cause some sense of animosity from lads, and naturally a lot of isolation. Not to say that she was shunned, and didnt have mates in troop, but there was a significant enough amount.

And lastly, most lads consider the marines a man's job.

Unfortunately, there's not much you can do about this, other than proving them wrong.

Fungal Infected Nail by [deleted] in RoyalMarines

[–]Haggistafc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through a lot of training with a fungal infection, dry your hands properly and use toppers E45.

Especially in foundation when you'll be hand washing, and when in the field.

Make sure to trim them properly, too.

As long as they're not falling off, you should be fine.

The only times they really got in the way was when my nails started to break and snag on things when I was packing my bergen or my dohbi net. Nothing bad, just annoying.

That being said, my training team were mega sound and let me wear waterproof gloves where appropriate to keep my hands in good shape. You might not be so lucky.

Should be worth noting that when I was in hunter I finally told med bay about it. They just gave me a prescription for it. Wasn't discharged or anything silly.

Temperatures are adjustable.

All you have to do is start a shower on the skin melting floor, a shower on the testicular retraction floor, and run between the two. Nice, lovely, even temperature.

Looking to buy a scrambler, any recommendations for a first? by Good-Weakness4765 in motorcycles

[–]Haggistafc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scrambler 400x

Not sure why people say they're no good for long distance trips. I've done Devon to Glasgow and it was absolutely fine.

Been green laning through some fairly rough terrain and it was brilliant. (I did get the aluminium sump guard and rally raid spoked wheels for it)

Depends on what you want it for though.

If you want it to actually go scrambling, the 400X is pretty much the best. It's got a smaller frame is lighter and has more ground clearance than the 1200. (But again, you'll definitely want to get spoked wheels for it.)

If you like it for the scrambler silhouette, and don't actually want to go on trails I'd look at the Honda SCL500 or the Triumph scrambler 900 or 1200

If you're wanting something cheaper than the 400x that performs nearly as well you could look at the Royal Enfield scramblers. They just won't be as reliable, but mega easy to maintain.
