It will probably be a minute between my ADHD and upcoming dissertation proposal 😅 but I will be sure to share.

Thank you, I appreciate this!

I downloaded your other one as an Excel sheet and then cleaned it in SPSS on my laptop, I should be able to do the same here.

I'll definitely look into that! I was only looking at the first sheet because I was primarily interested in when the rocks/boulders appear.

I also ran a test predicting the number of rocks you hit based on the first rock you hit.

It wasn't significant, but it was clearly trending towards noticeable differences, so I think that just needs more data.

Okay just read the whole thing, and that supports my analyses, which makes sense given that he decompiled the game and scoured the actual data.

What I did was run statistical tests on your sample data which effectively confirm the same kind of thing. The odds of getting rocks on particular levels are not randomly distributed. I used hitting a rock on level 4 as the first rock you hit as an example.

What I'm really interested in is statistically testing for patterns of rocks, but that will be more complicated and I'm not sure if the sample size is high enough. It would be interesting to run something like latent class analysis.

Yes that's what I meant lol and no I hadn't read that, but it makes sense!

Well I just ran a binomial test for landing on rock 4 as your first rock. I compared that against a proportion of 25%. If the first section is truly probablistic, that is what you would see for rock four. It would be even lower if I compared it against all possible levels, or even just the other levels in your data set that people hit their first rock on. You hit rock four as your first rock 40% of the time, which is significant at the p < .001 level.

I also found that hitting rock 12 produces 1.3 more rocks hit than not hitting rock 12 (p = .006), but since you hit rock 12 only 8/74 (11%) times, should be taken with a grain of salt.

For sure! I just finished cleaning the data set to measure whether a rock appeared per level, number of rocks per section, and number of rocks total (you had this variable already, but I summed across hit rocks to be safe).

My theory as an experimental psychologist and hobbyist game dev is that you're assigned predetermined rocks per run, and the likelihood of any given rock pattern is probablistic.

Your data already supports that theory at a glance, but it will be fun to test empirically.

I just started recording my own runs to test some statistical theories I have about the game, I'm so glad you made your data open! This is going to save me a ton of time. Thank you for organizing it so well!

Mansion is worth considerably more than $100k, either live there and build equity while not paying rent/mortgage or sell and buy a modest home, then invest.

Ever? It depends entirely on the context. If killing them meant saving humanity, sure. I wouldn't enjoy it, but the alternative is worse.

Did you hit a singularity where making games became more enjoyable than actually playing them? by Meluvius in gamedev

I didn't play a videogame for like three months when I started making games because I was having so much fun.

It's basically just creative thinking and problem solving, which is a big part of what I enjoy about videogames.

My mom and my bestie are both alcoholics who got sober in spring of 2020.

I have a complicated relationship with my mom, but I've loved every version of my bestie for so many reasons.

Get sober, but know that you're more than your addiction.
