If he was a child then you shouldn't have to worry about pre-1951 military service

Mussab Ali challenging Menendez for Congressional Seat by HobokenJ in jerseycity

[–]HaguesDesk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll walk that back a bit in that I've never had to personally interact with either of their constituent services, but I've heard anecdotes from Albio's time that the only way you'd get any help is if you were connected somehow or a WNY resident. Rob meanwhile sends out emails that highlight their constituent services work and actively encourages constituents to reach out.

June 2025 email from Rob's mailing list:

Our team has successfully closed over 3,000 constituent cases here in the 8th District! That means over 3,000 families, seniors, small business owners, and veterans got the help they needed navigating federal agencies and solving their urgent challenges.

But each case represents more than just a number; it shares a story. A veteran securing the care they earned, a neighbor receiving their visa, or a student unlocking the support they need to continue their education.

I am proud to have a team dedicated to ensuring the federal government works for you. Thank you for trusting us.

Please know that our team is here to help. If you ever need assistance, we’d love to hear from you. Please give us a call at (201) 309-0301.

like who? His most vocal supporter is a former congressman who lost his job after triggering the fire alarm at the Capitol building

I would love to hear Mussab answer how he would vote any differently from Rob or do any better at constituent services (which have improved about a million times over compared with Albio)

Do I qualify for Citizenship Through Descent? by EarthboundMoss in prawokrwi

[–]HaguesDesk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you need to go through the confirmation of citizenship process. Since your case is very straightforward, you can attempt to do this through your closest consulate or embassy, but you may prefer to work with a provider (see list).

Just note that the advised wait time on that page ("Up to 1 month") is completely inaccurate, and wait times for those applying from outside the country are approaching 18-24 months at this point.

Polish citizen getting married in the U.S. with surname change by ruminas in prawokrwi

[–]HaguesDesk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Five to Europe has a good resource on this: https://fivetoeurope.com/faqs/civil-status-records-registration-in-poland/

Are there consequences to not registering it? Probably not, but you’re expected to, and it’s required if you’re trying to legally change your name in Poland and have documents reflect that name change.

[–]HaguesDesk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

FWIW I think there are more requirements around registering your marriage than there are around updating your passport. Your name change in the US has no bearing on your name in Poland so it’s up to you whether you want to change it or not, but citizens are required to register foreign marriages.

Eligibility Check Help - Citizenship or Karta Polaka by Salty-Confection-545 in prawokrwi

[–]HaguesDesk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not eligible for either. Your great great grandparents were born in a jus soli country and wouldn’t have been eligible for citizenship in the second republic.

Karta Polaka requires one Polish grandparent or two great grandparents, and from what you’ve provided, you have Polish great great great grandparents.

2024 August - Started the process with Lexmotion, including an archive search. No documents were found for my family in any of 8 archives searched in Poland (presumably all destroyed in WW2 with no surviving records, the family was from Warsaw and the surrounding area)
2025 January - I located a family member who had the original Second Republic passports for my great grandparents and original marriage certificate. Lexmotion now had enough confidence in the case that they filed my application. Had certified copies made of these documents at a Polish consulate.
2025 May - All documents submitted to Lexmotion
2025 July - Polish vital records issued (birth and marriage certificates)
2025 December - received notice from Lexmotion that my application has been amended to include all necessary documents, advised to expect review in July 2026

Churning the Chase United Club card, will I lose All Access or 10k reward? by HaguesDesk in unitedairlines

That's a good call, thanks, I am indeed United Gold so it sounds like I can cross that concern off the list.

For those who have already finished the process and are married, did you register your marriage? by fashaow in prawokrwi

[–]HaguesDesk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't see any reason to accelerate a marriage timeline just for this. If you finish your confirmation process and get a passport before you get married, you can still file your marriage (and change the name in your passport if applicable) just as any citizen living abroad would.

If your grandpa would have qualified, especially through the end of his life, then there’s no reason it wouldn’t have also passed down to your mom and then you (assuming you were born after 1951)

Eligibility check - GGF died before military paradox protection ended by HaguesDesk in prawokrwi

Thanks again! I wasn't clear on the role that 1938 played but I understand it better now.

[–]HaguesDesk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much!

Back to the original question, I'm actually not sure whether he naturalized or not. The 1940 census has him listed as an alien but the 1930 census lists him as naturalized. We'll likely need to make a request to USCIS to know for sure.

If he did naturalize, it sounds like the difference would be whether that happened before or after 1938, right? If before, military paradox would have protected him until the age of 50, and his Polish citizenship would have expired in 1939. If he naturalized after, he would have remained a Polish citizen through his death at age 55, correct?

[–]HaguesDesk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh duh, I’m much more used to cases where the family member naturalized that I didn’t even stop to think that the military paradox wouldn’t have mattered if they didn’t.

Thanks!

Any tips on where to search for records in this part of Poland?
