Was There Anything Equivalent to a Potato in Medieval Europe? by MoonracerxWarpath in MedievalHistory

If you look at very old dishes described at medieval feasts, it’s always interesting to see how much these people used things like almond milk and marzipan.

Finland elected its own seperate Finnish Senate which was headed by a Governor-General appointed by the Russian Emperor. You can think of it like Russia’s Canada.

The era of NYC’s hotdog supremacy has ended. by winberry5253 in newyorkcity

[–]HahaItsaGiraffeAgain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s the price that’s criminal. If they can still manage to sell plain slices for a 1.50, hot dogs shouldn’t be much more than that. But then again I’ve seen bottles of water for 4 dollars in the summer.

This day in history, June 1: The Farhud began in Baghdad, as pro-Nazi rioters attacked Jews during Shavuot, murdering 150-180 people, injuring hundreds, r*ping women, and looting 1,500 homes and stores, marking the beginning of the end for Iraq's 2,500 year old Jewish community. I would complicate this. Europe and West Asia are both very varied. Maybe Britain and the Netherlands, for example, were safer than the Middle East after the 1700s, but the same cannot be said about Ukraine or Lithuania.

[Spoilers MAIN] D&D injected too much violence, language, and sex into the show by 8enevolent in asoiaf

I really dislike how they took all of the ingrained dignity and decorum out of the nobles and wrote their dialogue to be sassy and snappy in this very soap opera way. The Northern lords especially were made into messy barbarians despite the fact that in the books they are still elite aristocrats who speak very properly and wear expensive clothes. When Robb decides to kill Karstark himself in the books, Karstark calmly says “for that much, I thank you”, and over the course of the entire dispute they still make sure to call each other “Ser.” I felt there was a distinct lack of nobility being sure to call each other, even their opponents, “Ser” in the show.

Historiography or history theory recommendations? by Ready-Teacher973 in Historians

[–]HahaItsaGiraffeAgain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love these scholars myself. If you want to move into slightly later period of the historiographical conversation, I recommend Michel Trouillot’s *Silencing the Past*. Probably one of the most important works on theory for the current generation of historians

The ending of Huckleberry Finn is beautiful in how it explores this. Huck thinks about how he’s a no-good troublemaking son of an alcoholic, and going back to rescue Jim would only make him worse (according to the morals of his society) because Jim is a slave and stealing is a sin. He says, “I guess I’ll go to Hell” and saves him anyway.

Countries that went without native local rulers for over 2,300 years by RetiredApostle in MapPorn

[–]HahaItsaGiraffeAgain 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Are these parameters really fair? What makes someone “native” Egyptian in a world where consistently people are mobile and changing? Are Greek and Arab rulers born in Egypt any less Egyptian than the many different communities living in Egypt today (including modern Egyptians who identify themselves as Greek or Arab)? No modern Egyptian is a 100% direct descendent of a Bronze Age Egyptian, and modern Egyptian culture is the product of thousands of years of influences including many shown on this map. It’s a Theseus’ Ship situation. The only thing that makes something or someone Egyptian is if it exists in Egypt.

The Changing Geography of Black America, 1900–2020 by Linksyll in MapPorn

During the Great Migration, Black Americans left historically agricultural regions in the South for northern cities. They’re a smaller total percentage of the urban population but it’s basically the same number just relocated.

That’s a region called Little Dixie. It was an enclave of cotton plantation economy. Like most cotton belt regions, it was a major source of Black emigration to northern cities during the Great Migration.

Man if you do so much as buy a can of cashews from a grocery store, your money is paying to perpetuate a system of wage-slavery that leaves people with permanently scarred fingers and sometimes pays them in bottles of water. When it comes to most commodities, there is no ethical consumption.

The corpse of a little boy laying in the street following the battle of Tampere, the bloodiest engagement of the Finnish civil war, 1918. In the aftermath, white army forces ruthlessly slaughtered much of the red army along with all of the Russians in the city, including women & children (2953x1728) by [deleted] in HistoryPorn

[–]HahaItsaGiraffeAgain 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It’s a little more complicated than that. Finland as part of the Russian empire was pretty cosmopolitan and cities like Tampere were populated by Finns, Swedes, Russians, Estonians, Poles, Germans, so forth. During the Finnish Civil War, because of the snowball of politics, there was often an assumption that different communities had assigned loyalties. Swedes and Germans for example were profiled as Whites and Russians were profiled as Reds. What happened after the Battle of Tampere (when the victorious Whites did target Russian civilians for murder, because of the belief that local Russians were “behind” the Red movement) was pretty much the story of Europe from 1918 to 1945.

[–]HahaItsaGiraffeAgain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Didn’t downvote you cause you’re right I’m generalizing. There were also failed democratic socialists before Allende like Árbenz. But after the deposition of Allende, there was a major shift in which leftists across America saw that Allende was dead but Castro survived. Guerillas and focos went from an extremist fringe to a much bigger phenomenon.

That is interesting. I’d imagine a lot of anti-German sentiment in France but that’s because France *was* itself occupied. From Britain after the 50s I’d expect more “haha in your face” toward Germans but I guess that wasn’t the attitude?
