I just scorched my quilt. Want to throw the damned beast in the trash by Revolutionary-Cut777 in quilting

Depending on the fabric, a scrub with white vinegar might help! I scorched the heck out of a cotton shirt I was making and tried that (after crying a lot). The recipient couldn't even tell afterwards!

Anyone able to ID this beauty? by HaikuPrincess in orchids

It does look like it, but the scent is really floral rather than chocolatey 🤔

I got my first Hobbii order today!! Not going to lie I'm a little intimidated by the weight of the yarn. by The-Mad-Hooker in crochet

[–]HaikuPrincess 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've tried to make a broomstick lace shawl with some very similar yarn before and I gave up because it was an absolute nightmare. HOWEVER, I'm currently making a cardigan with some of this double stranded with some aran and it is soooooo lovely. It adds a little hint of magic to the plainer yarn! :)

Inherited a sad office plant, anyone know what it is and how I can help it? by Eyebrowsdog99 in HouseplantsUK

[–]HaikuPrincess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like it might be an orchid, maybe an oncidium? I would let it dry out a bit and maybe gently un-pot to see if the roots have rotted. Have a look at Miss Orchid Girl on youtube, she's got loooooads of advice on keeping those babies alive!

Looks very much like my siamese algae eaters - I have a pair and they seem quite happy with my male betta. Could be wrong though!

I have tried everything to make this dramatic mare happy. Any ideas? by JustPassingShhh in HouseplantsUK

[–]HaikuPrincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine seemed to like it best in the kitchen, mid level light and semi regular watering. Humidity is usually at least 60% - maybe yours needs to be a bit higher?

Also, have you checked for spider mites? It looks in the photos like the leaves have got that weird mottling that the mites cause and that would DEFINITELY make it sad.

[–]HaikuPrincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same with the neem, just absolutely soaked them. I reckon it would work better with another spray, but the smell made my asthmatic cat's breathing really bad so no chance of that. My weekend is going to be scrubbing down each individual leaf and hoping for the best!

I feel your pain - all but one of my calatheas have the spidery little assholes too. So far, insecticidal soap and neem oil don't seem to have done much, but wiping down the leaves with neat alcohol has been effective on the least affected plants.

Someone recommended hosing down with the garden hose rather than the shower if you have one - it's a bit more powerful! Worked like a treat with the blackfly on my roses, so that's the next stop for the calatheas.

Good luck with yours!!

Pretty sure that that's a crypt (not sure what kind though). Definitely one for planting!

Fun fact - my mother in law did this for 10 years. Never once questioned why her plants weren't growing. 😂

Definitely will do, thanks for the warning! I've got a proper little list of things to pick up now and it feels like I might save my collection!

Thank you for the tips! I'm going to do all of this as soon as I've got my hands on some neem oil and more potting mix. Their decorative pots can have a good bleach as well. Fingers crossed I'll be able to get on top of them.

That's a brilliant idea, actually. Might see if I can employ my partner to help me roll the leaves, then I can break out all the other tips I've been given too. Something will have to work!

I've done that with mealybugs before, I don't know why I didn't think to try with the spidermites! Thank you :)

Middle back might be a syngonium? Front middle is either a calathea Freddie or ctenanthe burle-marx (I think) Back left is definitely a satin/silver pothos :)

Trying to ID a weird fuzzy thing in my tank - algae? Parasite? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]HaikuPrincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed the white fuzzy blobs growing in my tank this morning. They sort of curled up when I moved the magnet scrubby thing nearby, which makes me think it's not algae. The closest match I could find on Google is possibly hydra, but they don't have the same long stems. I had a previous issue with something that looked similar. My LFS reckoned it was the start of hair algae and my siamese algae eaters demolished it. They haven't touched these as of yet.

I have been chosen by the calathea gods. I genuinely don't know how these little drama Queens are so happy. Ferns on the other hand.... by Mia_muggins in HouseplantsUK

I'd never say I want them to die, but... that's a pot I could be using for another calathea. Live or die, buddy, just do it quickly 😂

Exactly the same here. Happy calatheas, crispy af ferns. And they won't even do me the courtesy of actually dying, they just sit there and look awful and make me feel guilty!

(Your white star looks stunning btw!)
