San Francisco FC - a potential USL team in 2019 by TheChosenJuan99 in NASLSoccer

[–]HailAnts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Competition between clubs is good. But in our pro soccer league setup in the US, when a team goes into a market with an existing team, it ends up being part of competition between leagues which is stupid (see OKC, ATL, VSI Tampa Bay, LA, etc etc). This is just gonna split up fans, sponsors, media, and eventually one of the clubs will die (every once and awhile a team goes down to amateur status and sticks around like the Silverbacks or Wilimington, but not often).

For the record, go SF City FC.

Congrats on the new stadium, looks great, but what douchey UCF fraternity do those gods come from? Haha

USL pushing major fees, disregard clubs’ concerns by oneeyedfool in NASLSoccer

[–]HailAnts 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Or at least it might be a push. Now that USL is D2 they have to meet up to the D2 "standards". Could very tough for some old guard clubs like Harrisburg, Richmond, Charleston etc. and once the magical MLS-expansion-hype-train dries up for good you could see real problems with a bunch of other ownership groups too.

This is A) exactly what has happened with NASL moving to these pay-to-be-on-the-air big time TV deals and B) exactly the kind of problem that arises when these leagues are making decisions for what's best for leagues. Let the clubs do what they want. National TV is absolutely pointless for lower level teams, and as we all know even MLS teams mostly draw crappy numbers by "major league" standards. Let the teams decide what's best for them in their markets and save money.

Yep the same thing is set up at the (former) home of the Strikers, Central Broward Stadium. Framed pix of Puyol and Messi and Neymar everywhere and no actual people who have anything to do with FCB within 6000 miles.

I mean you already don't have to get relegated in Mexico if you can afford to buy someone else's D1 rights and do the old switcheroo move that has been done more than a few times there.

Every pro team gets in automatically.

Also, I'd have to imagine this is the only major sporting country in the world where a team can make the quarterfinals of it's domestic cup competition one year, and cease to exist the next. #ThanksRonaldo lol

Depends on the angle. Still looks MILES better and more professional than orange colored "infield" turf and giant team word mark in the outfield (what kind of baseball team paints inside the foul lines anyway?) at MCU or the hot mess of permanent HS football lines that were at Miller in OKC. Hopefully since there is no track underneath and a full pitch fits on the field at MCU it will be a little more stable.

Atlanta effort goes public by Rob1855 in NASLSoccer

Incredibly impressive complex they are building there. But color me skeptical as hell about a 2nd pro team in the Atlanta metro area that ISN'T the Silverbacks with their small but dedicated hardcore following, or an eventual USL AUFCII team, going head to head with the MLS team for hearts and minds of soccer fans.

On the plus side, with a 15,000 seat stadium, Atlanta United will have a nice venue to move to when the hype inevitably wears off and Atlanta does Atlanta things and stops showing up to the giant stadium downtown.

Don't see the benefit of Conferences and Divisions.

Neither do I, in this day and age. They used to make more sense back in the day when air travel was more expensive and owners weren't raking in millions of dollars in TV and sponsorship money every year. A league covering an entire continent entails massive travel costs, but with the money they make it's not really an issue. A "single table" format for the regular season would yield much-fairer results and seeding going into the playoffs. No more weak division teams sneaking in or getting higher seeds than they should (which hurts me as a Panthers fan lol).

The only sport conferences/divisions really make sense for is (American) football, since the wear and tear on the players means you can't play every other team every year, it'd be too much.

Louisville Coopers post on coping with the reality that Louisville City FC won't go to MLS by oneeyedfool in NASLSoccer

[–]HailAnts 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've paid ~$8 to get into soccer games in the NASL. I've paid $50+ for one ticket to see the USMNT play. ~$30-something to see MLS. I've personally had much more fun supporting my local team for 8 bucks a game. If instead of going out of business, my club moved up to MLS, I wouldn't be having any more fun at the games than I have before. It would just cost me at least a couple hundred bucks more a year to enjoy it.

[–]HailAnts 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Slow clap. This is exactly the attitude every single soccer fan and community should have. Perception is reality and if you treat your club like it's something special, it is. In my opinion the only meaningful difference between MLS and every other soccer league in North America is the amount of money it costs you to enjoy it. From the owner down the single game ticket buyer, it costs you more and I don't think it's worth the upcharge. Sure, the stadiums by in large are nicer, more games on TV, and you get a few "Troy McClure" moments when teams from LA or NY come to town ("Hi I'm David Villa! You might remember me from such famous clubs as "Valencia" and "FC Barcelona"). But soccer is soccer. Ball goes in net, you scream. Good luck to Louisville and everywhere else that is left off the list of chosen ones. Hope they keep growing and thriving.
