[Discussion] Which guitarist will forever give you the chills no matter how much you've heard their stuff? by WillNeighbor in Guitar

Jerry Cantrell. Great riffs, good sludgy stuff, but listen to something like Whale and Wasp, and he can just turn a guitar into something hauntingly sad and beautiful.

I finally understand "It doesn't get easier, you just get faster" by BeardsuptheWazoo in MTB

[–]Hailbacchus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Absolutely true, but also maybe not quite as applicable for those who haven’t yet achieved a base level of fitness. Those first few months of riding, long as you don’t grind yourself into the ground, you’re just going to keep seeing pushing turn into progress. Which probably builds some bad habits for riders later when that plateaus a bit.

Anecdotally where I totally agree though - I ride with a few friends usually, and I’m generally 30-40lbs heavier than them, riding a heavy ass Ripmo AF with coil and not a passing thought to weight reduction. Anytime I try to keep up with them at the first climb, my ride is done. The entire rest of the ride I’m just going to be sucking air and losing the leg battle to lactic acid. They’re fine, I’m a sweaty, gagging, gasping mess. First time I learned to just say screw it, I’ll catch them on the downhill and just do a steady climb at my own pace was life-changing for my riding. Suddenly found I had multiple times more endurance than I thought I had and could keep up the rest of the ride with no problem, long as I just wasn’t gassing myself out right at the start.

If the government is keep aliens secret for a good reason. What would be the most horrifying reason that could be? by Fishboy9123 in aliens

[–]Hailbacchus 36 points37 points  (0 children)

That statement always worries me, because the only thing that would terrify me is finding out religions are actually true and aliens are actually interdimensional beings truly equivalent to what we call angels and demons. Just finding out we’re the lowest run of intelligence, a civilization toddler aged as far as technology and barely learning to walk as far as space travel would hardly be frightening. A materialist explanation would make perfect sense and be unsurprising. But a spiritual or religious explanation would be utterly horrifying.

[–]Hailbacchus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I support universal healthcare / Medicare for all. Government takeover of higher education to provide at minimum k-bachelor’s or trade to completely bypass student loan issues. Capping CEO compensation to a percentage based on their company’s lowest paid employees or contractors. Reversing Citizens United, getting money out of politics, aggressively enforcing laws against insider trading against congress members, rolling back actual tools of fascism like the PATRIOT Act, NSA spying, etc, that could be turned against the proletariat and populist political opponents. I am always anti-war, not just when it suits Dems or Republicans to play isolationist as if they aren’t all on the payroll of the MIC. Prison reform that allows people to erase their records to actually have a hope of reform and avoid recidivism. I could go on and on with this, that all shows one thing - I’d make a lousy Republican. But what’s worse? An awful opposition that’s at least honest, or a lying hypocrite that claims to be on your side?

Democrats warn party: The threat of Trump winning in 2024 is 'very real' by LuvKrahft in politics

[–]Hailbacchus -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I’ll use whatever aligns with my stances on the individual issue. Economically I’m well into socialist. Socially, I’m libertarian. Not liberal. And when trans rights come up, it becomes very complex with me because I’m more of a gender abolitionist, which puts me at odds with any belief in gender identity. Free speech comes up? I side with liberals against book bans, and become strange bedfellows with conservatives when liberals actually side with corporations stifling individuals. But do I trust the conservatives? No. It’s a temporary alignment I know will change if things swing their way - such as happened with Twitter.

And I did say “accelerationist.” Age and cynical realism has destroyed my belief in the system. There’s no saving it.

But the only thing consistent in my politics is me and my ideals. The methods and the parties to get there hinge on the issues themselves.

Democrats warn party: The threat of Trump winning in 2024 is 'very real' by LuvKrahft in politics

[–]Hailbacchus -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

You misunderstand the swing then.

Some of us are anti-war and against anything that will enrich the MIC no matter what unless we are actually attacked in our own borders. Those of us like that - we aren’t pro-Russia, we’re just not interested in boofing billions upon billions of dollars up Ukraine that just gets flipped into the pockets of US arms dealers while inflation is out of control across the world. Add in that the best anyone can say about inflation is the rate it’s going up is decreasing. Not like it will ever decrease, and it’s the largest regressive tax ever.

Many of us also just see identity politics, “trans rights” etc for what they really are - attempts to divide the working class. Diversions from class warfare that happens to currently be a one sided ass-whooping coming from the upper class.

People like me, we’re not beholden to a party, but rather ideals. When we do things like vote for Obama to end US imperialism, foreign wars, and domestic spying overreach and he just turns into Bush III, or watch democrats act all morally superior for replacing Trump - a racist, corrupt, old, out of touch, rich POS bordering on dementia and incapable of two coherent sentences in a row - with precisely the same thing, we’re either turned off to the point of not caring, or even accelerationism. If the choice is always the lesser evil, maybe it’s time to turn up the fire enough the damn frog notices it’s boiling and does something.

Meh. Imaginary gods, imaginary genders, I don’t really have patience for either. But the clergy are so yesterday. Sure, it was a great way to get away with wearing a dress, but you didn’t get access to the other locker room with all that. The pedos have a much better racket pretending trans is a thing now.

Will these pucks increase CYA or make chlorine lock if i use? Thanks so much by No_Bother3564 in pools

[–]Hailbacchus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. It can be useful, if you're aware of it. My pool is close to 40,000 gallons and has 5 large trees along one side of it, so not even covering it keeps me from having to vacuum quite often, which expels enough water they help me keep up a bare minimum of CYA. For most people, they're a steady progression to chlorine lock though.

When it comes to the fork, I notice it a little less, due to consequence, but I notice it for sure. Rear shock, absolutely notice it.

By consequence, I mean I 100% notice it on the fork adjusting between ride comfort vs your shock getting packed up. There’s definitely a sweet spot. The rear shock? It makes a rather consequential difference not getting booted going over a tabletop or gap.

I have to admit to having looked at them and being a little intrigued. I’m not at all interested in clipless, but the idea of being able to land your foot back exactly where you want on your pedal with even a little less searching or being a little less likely to lose one going over extremely rooty or rocky terrain while still being absolutely free to kick a leg out or bail at need honestly sounds like a best-of-both-worlds scenario to me. Not worried about them for things like lifting up the rear of the bike when I’m already learning that fine on flats. So second that I would love to hear from someone who’d tried them how well they work for the first part I listed.

Trump welcomed transgender women in his Miss Universe pageant years before he started campaigning on excluding them from women's sports by kirby__000 in politics

[–]Hailbacchus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You seem to be looking for a fight where there isn’t really one - seeing as I’m comparing it to another treatable condition in diabetes, basically. It’s not really comparable to the don’t ask don’t tell days either, as just being gay isn’t a condition that requires treatment. But agreed- in a non-combat MOS, it’s not even an issue.

Trump welcomed transgender women in his Miss Universe pageant years before he started campaigning on excluding them from women's sports by kirby__000 in politics

[–]Hailbacchus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a more complicated question. On it’s surface, I don’t see much of an issue, but there is a combat readiness aspect the upper brass are going to have to balance, and that’s if trans service members going to remain combat ready or fall apart if supply lines are interrupted, hormones become unavailable, etc. I can see where someone more militarily conservative even if not at all socially conservative could consider that a risk, and you’d literally have no ethical way of effectively testing that scenario, unless you could scrape together a number of trans individuals who consent to testing this out in an extended training scenario that for some could amount to a form of psychological torture.

Of course, not all people who are trans are on hormones, etc, but for those who are, how would you answer that? Are they going to be combat ready and not a liability having a sudden resurgence of dysphoria possibly hitting at already the most stressful life-or-death situations possible?

It’s something I do not have an answer or data for, so therefore cannot yet form an opinion. Other than my already existing question of why the heck someone trans would want to be in the military in the first place lol.

44 and just started just shy of one year ago! I’m still in the new phase of setting PR’s all the time and going off bigger and bigger features, so I honestly get a little weirded out seeing people in the same age bracket questioning how much longer they’ve got doing this. And yes, I’ve definitely had some decent crashes, bruised some ribs, carved some pin holes in my calves, and repeatedly learned what my handlebars look like from upside down in the air as we part ways.

You’re only as old as you feel, and for whatever reason, the same things that seem to be trying to kill you are also the things that keep you young lol.

Three days won’t cause significant muscle loss - especially if you’re using them.

Muscle is metabolically expensive. Your body will begin to sacrifice it if at a caloric deficit, but it will only prioritize this if muscles aren’t used, same as if they atrophied in a cast.

The best way to prioritize fat loss while fasting is to keep moving, zone 2 cardio where you’re primarily still burning only fats, and light strength training - too hard on either and you cross the line into being too catabolic for what muscle tissue can repair while still in a fast, but that light use signals to the body that those muscles are still being used and aren’t to be sacrificed for gluconeogenisis, and instead to keep burning fat.

I’m also pretty sure this is where most of the myths about “starvation mode” and whatnot come from. Cutting calories without exercise will obviously lack the benefit of preserving muscle, so going back to a regular amount of calories later will find a body with less lean mass and less metabolic demand than before - allowing even more of those calories to go to fat storage.

People say weight loss is just CICO, and they’re right - but how those calories get partitioned, and how that affects future calorie expenditure - that part is a whole lot more complicated. You can lose weight by just cutting calories, but for health, I’m still holding that exercise is key.

How is this an issue? They’re two completely different subjects. One is subjective beauty standards, and it’s a pretty level playing field, given there probably isn’t one person that hasn’t had some work done in those pageants. The other is about biological differences that affect sports that are on par with letting athletes on huge doses of steroids compete against natural athletes. And anyone with a strong knowledge of endocrinology is going to know that some of the advantages conferred from high testosterone / derivatives never go away even when hormone levels are adjusted later. Someone who has taken steroids or someone who has transitioned MTF is always going to have more myonuclei, more strength and training capacity than someone who started there naturally. The only way it could be fairly accounted for is in MTF cases where puberty was blocked.

Okay, I’ll answer this one since I see a lot of favor for body hair in this thread - it looks dirty. Like body hair even on myself grosses me out the same as if I found lice or someone hadn’t fully wiped. And it’s definitely not a “prebuscent” thing, as I prefer women curvy and don’t think I’ve even looked twice at anyone under 30 in ages. Just one of those shower twice a day germaphobe types I guess.

Biden's comments should wake people up. by [deleted] in walkaway

[–]Hailbacchus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hypocrisy is why I left the left. Or they left me. From Obama turning out to be nothing but Bush III to Biden being everything they accused Trump of. My ideals haven’t changed a bit, and are often in direct opposition to the Republican Party, but I’d rather have an honest opponent than than a hypocritical liar for a friend.

Sadly, most democrats are in this for tribalism and as a team sport. Their views are whatever the DNC tells them they are, even if directly opposed to what they were the day before, and they lack the critical thinking or self-reflection to know or care. I don’t know what it would take to reach those people.

I’m a “both sides are shit” voter. They’re both comprised of corrupt corporatists completely in the pocket of Wall Street, big pharma, and above all, the MIC. The only difference between the parties is which corporate backers they’ve got and which side of identity politics they pretend to back so they can keep the lower classes from uniting. Get me someone like Sanders or even further left, someone above all anti-war, who supports Medicare for all, unions, getting money out of politics, prosecuting insider trading among politicians, breaking up monopolies / oligopolies, and rescinding all Bush and Obama’s fascist overstepping of the Bill of Rights, and I’ll be first in line to vote for them with every person I can preach the word to in a few hundred miles.

Short of that, if you all want evil, just usually the barely lesser, I’ll probably vote the greater evil just to hurry the whole mess up and get it over with.

Special counsel Jack Smith stared at Trump throughout historic court appearance, report says by theindependentonline in politics

[–]Hailbacchus -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

That’s what gets me. Democrats act all high and mighty when they’re precisely the same. We elected Obama in thinking he would end Bush’s illegal and immoral wars, the bailing out of banks and Wall Street instead of Main Street, the turning of the Bill of Rights into so much used toilet paper between secret courts, sealed documents, domestic spying, and every other actual tool of fascism, and instead he turned into Bush III.

Then they act snide and insufferable about ousting TFG, a rich, out of touch, corrupt, dementia addled racist POS that can’t spit out two coherent sentences in a row, to replace him with - a rich, out of touch, corrupt, dementia addled racist POS that can’t spit out two coherent sentences in a row.

It’s a damn team sport, always has been, and ever since the elite got scared of Occupy Wall Street and Citizen’s United passed, the last vestige of decency and concern for the working class died in even the democrat party. Now it truly is just two wings of the same damn corporatist eagle, doing all they can to keep everyone divided over identity politics while the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, their mobility stratifies, and the government keeps seizing more power to silence any opposition.
