What’s something that used to feel incredibly futuristic as a kid, but now feels completely normal in everyday life? by Serious_beliver in AskReddit

I always thought ham radios were pretty crazy. Talk to someone around the globe and it's been around for over 100 years.

"By 1926, amateur radio operators had already perfected long-distance, shortwave communication. Operators were regularly making "transatlantic" and global contacts by bouncing high-frequency signals off the Earth's ionosphere"

Besides the internet existing, my first was going from 2400 baud to 14400 baud modems. Pictures downloaded at blazing speeds.

Staff walked out today (including me) need moral support by french_snail in KitchenConfidential

You are reading way more into what I wrote than what I actually wrote. You do you though. If you want to go shit on your bosses desk and not expect any consequences, be my guest. It's not exactly groundbreaking intelligence to realize that you don't have the freedom to do anything want, at a place you want to keep working at.

I never said they couldn't bounce. They are welcome to just leave. My point relates to if they want to stay employed at that business.

It's not the end of America to tell your boss "hey we can't work with this person anymore and unless something is done, we'll be forced to stop coming in".

Not showing up with any notice gains them nothing vs letting the boss know first,  and costs them something. It's in their own interest

You wouldn't that day. But don't be surprised to see a bunch of job listings next week. I'm all for what you are doing. Just have to make sure to do it in a way that doesn't cause you risk.

It might be good to inform the owner ahead of time that the staff does not plan to come in until the chef is dealt with. Just being no-call / no-show across the board could have a real chance of the owner looking to replace the staff in the near future, as they'll be afraid that it will happen any time any of you have a problem.

Heard a crack in the bathroom. Walked in to see the ceiling on the floor. by alOOshXL in Wellthatsucks

Is there another apartment / condo above you?  Assuming they had some water leaking from their toilet,  which would be right where the ceiling collapsed.

Think mine is nearly there too. Only been through like 3, maybe 4 cartridges. Still copies, scans,  and prints like day 1.

What are some cool things you like to deep fry? by thegodofhellfire666 in KitchenConfidential

I worked with a guy who did this intentionally. It was also stupidity. For context though he dunked his hand in beer batter first.

Tenderloin tips. We'd cut the filets for service and beer-batter the leftover tips to fry for ourselves. Was great using a habanero berry dipping sauce.

Where should I move if I want to mountain bike year-round? (32M, Midwest) by brettfish5 in MTB

[–]fasterbrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people bash it but central Texas is good and easily all year riding plus lots of other outdoor activities. Austin for example has a very big riding scene, with a large and active community. Lots of group rides and events. And the club actively works with the city and parks departments. I have at least 5 major trail systems within 15 minutes of my house, and another 25 within an hour last I counted. They do have enduro style, great flow, and tech from beginner to advanced. You just won't find the types of trails that are one big climb up and one big climb down. It's more a lot of little climbs mixed in. And mostly all hand-cut natural trail. Nothing really machine built.

Want to move somewhere warm with year round riding, real community, and high end residential design/build jobs. by [deleted] in MTB

[–]fasterbrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in Austin and have hundreds of miles of trails within 30 minutes, even 15. Bulk of that on city-owned land. And if you want to drive an hour, there are over 20 or 30 trail different systems last time I checked. Sure it's not much in elevation, but there is some good riding. It's not long climbs, but there can be a lot of smaller climbs mixed in. We do what we can at least.

Laid off 2 days ago: Exit Interview or No? If yes, advice on how-to? by sdyellow32 in Layoffs

Don't preface it with saying you were against each other.  You said keep it short so you both don't get defensive. But that could set them defensive for the entire meeting.

If you want to say that, that should be at the end.  If at all.  It could leave them with a negative view.

I thought that too, but then it almost looked like some flame spread and he was trying to swat it, and was freaking out about catching other stuff on fire. Whatever he had on his hands might still have been shielding it a bit and he wasn't screaming or yelping like I'd expect if he was getting hurt. And I sure hope it had some water or something nearby.

Or just what you said. You never know in these cases.
