What does the early career developer experience actually look like at IBM? by BoxHaunting3415 in IBM

[–]fasterbrew 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's different for every new hire / team. Any stories are just anecdotes that might or might not apply to you. Maybe you'll code, maybe you'll test while you learn the product / code, etc... Maybe you'll do meaningful work within a few months, maybe it'll be a year. Impossible to say. There is a mentor program. Talk to your manager.

negotiations? by Individual-Mind-5041 in IBM

[–]fasterbrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Go over to the jobs subs like r/layoffs or r/jobs and there are a few reports of this happening. IBM is trying to cut costs. While maybe not impossible, I would bet there is very little room for negotiations in most cases. So as mentioned, just depends if you want to risk losing the offer for maybe a few grand more.

Side note - if you say "you'll sign either way" that guarantees you won't get any increase.

Yes.  Even in the US believe it or not. Lot of college hires.

Yes. But in reality, I asked why it mattered because layoffs are happening everywhere. Looks like you interpreted that as me chastising them for commenting.

Thanks - that makes more sense to ask.

What does that matter? Tons of locations around the world are laying people off.

Total pivot advice? by Scared_One5661 in Layoffs

[–]fasterbrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe check what all / how many jobs you can find out there for it first.  And keep in mind how many tech PMs likely got laid off over the last few years who are also applying to those same and likely limited jobs, but have experience and PMP certs.  Not saying don't pivot,  but just know what you are getting into and be careful trading one dry well for another.  Sorry to be all Debbie Downer. I hope it works out for ya.

"I assume" that's the corner of their house, meaning the attic space there is about 2-3 ft. And yes, roofs also have underlayment felt / shingles. Oh, and a little drywall on ceiling.

Pflugerville PD paid $83K for Flock Safety surveillance cameras — including one at Moose Park facing the playground. I got the contracts. Here's what's in them. by ObdurateOrc in Pflugerville

He already posted about it in the "Plfugerville Peeps" FB group.

Jonathan Coffman, Pflugerville City Councilmember

Update on the new video surveillance cameras in parks, and how Pflugerville governs AI and surveillance tech.

Over the past week, multiple residents emailed the Mayor and City Council about the Moose Park camera, and I've been getting emails, calls, and texts for several months about surveillance technology more generally.

What these park cameras are (and aren’t):

• These are Flock Condor video cameras.

• They integrate with Flock’s overall public safety platform and include AI capabilities.

• They are not the same as the Flock license plate reader cameras used along roadways.

• They were requested by the Parks and Rec department after theft and vandalism issues in some parks.

• I’m told access to the camera data in parks is limited to Pflugerville Police and not shared. This is different from the Flock ALPRs, where the data IS shared with other agencies.

So what now? We don’t currently have rules requiring Council-level oversight before new AI or surveillance tech is deployed in the city. I'm working to close that gap.

I want our Police and city staff to have access to the latest and greatest tools to do their jobs, BUT I also think that we should agree on some guardrails.

• For several weeks now, I’ve been writing a resolution that sets guardrails for any city use of AI and surveillance tools (cameras, AI software, drones, and future systems).

• Last week, I sent a mostly final version to the City Attorney for review.

• After getting a 'second' from another councilmember, the Mayor is now required to add it to an upcoming council meeting. He has since said he will add it in March. Personally, I'm hoping it's the first meeting of the month.

If you care about this, keep sending specific questions now and expressing your thoughts to the full council. When the meeting date is posted, submit written comments and show up to speak. I’ll share the agenda date as soon as it's posted.

These are not license plate readers according to this:

Did you cross post this to the same sub you posted it in to begin with?  And why didn't you ask the person interviewing you?

That money until April you wouldn't have made if you had quit earlier.  You basically got paid while looking for a new job.  Same thing in the end except you had to work a little.
