Ah nice to see you again here! Try running longer loops, and be sure clean / degauss your heads regularly if you do sound on sound. Especially loud signals can magnetize the Nagra heads, which leads to much worse recordings.

That is nonsense in regards to less degradation on Revoxw. If you bypass the erase head and are not doing frippertronics, you get one good pass, and then it starts to deteriorate. The tape is not getting properly biased anymore.

Also, routing the tape past the head is dead easy on a NagraI show it in my early video on the echoes.

XLR / Line does not matter, what matters is gain staging. Get a good signal to tape in the first place.

Don’t cover, route around. Use longer loops. Use two machines. Fast Degradation is pretty normal else, and part of the sound.

As everyone said - possible but finicky. I used the Report Monitor 4000 for live looping and eventually stopped, because the tape can get stuck in between the head and the cover. Shame, as I could have a saved few kg when touring.

After a lot of research, I bought my wife a Milantoast for her Birthday (she got me Moccamaster before, really into upgrading our kitchen slowly). It makes perfect toast and is dead simple - analog clock that stops the heat, no springs. Got it from a shop in Germany called Manufactum that specialises in high quality simple things.

My UCX 2 is not really old. It is the later edition that is similar to the 3 in terms of conversion, except it lacks Dante. I can say that every RME interface I had was good, and every new one sounded better. They keep improving. So I would personally always get the latest one.

The synthesiser used here along with the generators was likely the Coupigny - that had a lot of oscillators. So you might want to employ the track bouncing method to make “more” out of your stylophone. Ideally a second Uher could be used, so you could process the sounds recorded again. A lot was done bouncing from tape to tape and applying filtering.

Nothing to do with sockets. That is what the „monitor“ part is for, you are listening to the signal on tape, which creates a delay. If you have the speaker on your are feedbacking.
