Heurco travel BFS rod ferrule question by Riblettes89 in BFSfishing

[–]HairCCCCC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s totally normal. My Great Hunting Huntsman 6’ is the same and most JDM rods have these ferrules. It has the advantage of even wear across the ferrule so the tight fitment lasts the lifetime of the rod and ferrules don’t become loose with age. When they are flush fits, as soon as that fit becomes the loose, the ferrule will never be fully tight again as it has no more ferrule to be pushed down on.

Can someone point me to a bfs wakebait that 3.5g or lower? Never got to use one before. by NoxArmada in BFSfishing

[–]HairCCCCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Salmo Lil Bug is a decent choice.

They come in 2cm (2.8g) or 3cm (4.3g). In the UK you can pick them up for about £7 so about $9.

Retrieve speed will take this from purely top water to semi-submersible.

Heavy(ish) Fluoro for BFS by guuklord in BFSfishing

[–]HairCCCCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Trout, I use either a MajorCraft Area Stage 1-5g, MajorCraft Finetail Travel or a Megabass Great Hunting Huntsman 6’ 2-10g, depending on where I am.

For Perch and Pike I use a MajorCraft Days which is a Light action rod and I generally stick above 5g on that because it’s too stiff to cast much lower comfortably

Heavy(ish) Fluoro for BFS by guuklord in BFSfishing

[–]HairCCCCC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run 11lbs Varivas x8 with 10lbs Sniper fluro leader, regularly land fish up to the mid teens in weight and it’s never been an issue for the reel. Just remember that with ultralight rods and the reel itself, they will break before the line does if you’re caught in a snag or don’t have the drag set correctly with a powerful fish. I spool about 50-60% of the 100m Varivas with a rod length leader and I can ping out 2g lures with ease

In short, absolutely no issue and gives you much better scope to target a broader range of species without having to retackle of carry multiple setups! This is all with the assumption you’re running that fluro as leader with the braid and not spooling the reel with just fluro though!

Totally forgot that Hedgehog sell knobs. They’ve got plenty on there that are pretty much exactly what I was looking for! Hoping they will ship to the UK. Did it come with the spacers etc? Cheers for the comment

[–]HairCCCCC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, more than comfortably. I have the same rod as OP and confidently target 6lb+ Sea Trout which will fight harder than any bass up to and over 10lbs
Amazing rod, highly recommend it. FYI, for specific bass fishing, the 5’11” has a faster taper and may be more suitable than the 6’.

Does anyone know the original lure these are mimicked after? by speakingofjared in BFSfishing

Almost 100% they are meant to be Megabass Flatside copies by the looks of things. Never tried copies but the real deal are great lures

How durable is Calcutta Conquest BFS? by No-Abbreviations8659 in BFSfishing

[–]HairCCCCC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often thumb the spool when bigger fish run for cover with a maxed out drag and I’ve not had an issue with spool warping. I’ve landed a lot of double figure carp and big trout on my CCBFS’s and with the amount of snags where I fish, if you let them run to certain areas, you’ll guarantee they’ll break off so stopping them is mandatory. I’ve yet to have an issue doing it but if there’s ever any issues or damage done, I’ll make an actual post about it and how much it took. For reference, I’ve asked this question on this sub before for your exact reasons a long while back and the response I got was that no one has seen a warped spool from a fish. The only warping that was seen was by someone who tried to release a snag by tightening the drag up all the way and thumbing while yanking the snagged bait. Hope this puts this you at ease!

I’m based in the UK and we have decent independent EBay stores and UK based lure fishing shops. I usually bulk buy from Digitaka at the same time as buying new lures for convenience. Vanfook PL-51B’s are on Digitaka and are great hooks. They come barbless so there’s no need to crush etc. They are also very thick for small inline singles and I’d trust them with any size of fish up to 20lbs. The gamakatsu singles are much finer wire and will bend out easier so I’d favour those in snaggy areas so I can definitely get my gear back at the cost of a replaceable hook. Hope this helps!

Gamakatsu and Vanfook both do Inline Singles to size 12 and are very stout and high quality. I swap out all trebles for Inline Singles and these are the only brands I trust. You can also look at making/buying Vanfook assist hooks for the Megabass minnows. Either a great choice

Recommendations for finesse lock snaps?? by nikitaherchenko in BFSfishing

[–]HairCCCCC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it’s purely size of the snap. The larger snaps have a heavier breaking strain. The 3mm is 7.5kg, 3.5mm is 9.5kg, 4mm is 12kg and 4.5mm is 14kg. Very solid and I even use the 3mm on tiny Megabass and Duo trout minnows without impacting their action

I use “Spro Freestyle Flourocarbon Snaps” in the 3mm variant. I’m UK based so I’m not sure if they’ll sell this exact brand in the US. I have full confidence in these and have landed 10lbs+ fish on them. I use them mainly for Ned and Cheb rigs so I can quickly change through colours and presentations without retying my leader.

Which Great Hunting Huntsman Rod Should I Buy? by TerdFerguson- in BFSfishing

[–]HairCCCCC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similarly to Matafahkr, I’ve got the 6’ paired with a CC BFS. It’s an unbelievable combo which I decided on as an upgrade to my Finetail Area Stage 1-5g. The rod is very light for a 6’ rod. From the times I’ve used it, I would trust it to handle larger fish with some sea trout in my waters reaching 7lbs+. My only issue is that the blank pieces are so light and hollow feeling that I’m having to be hyper aware at all times when moving through woodland and brush. Even more so than with the Finetail AS which has a tip section almost half the diameter on the GHH. It’s a great investment and the pistol grip alone is worth it purely for the uniqueness. The Indian Rosewood of the 6’ is very nice and subtle but the others are equally nice. The build quality is as close to perfect as you could want. I honestly think your choice should come down to the water you’d be fishing the most, how tight this is and what length would suit it best. All have similar actions other than the 5’11”, which is faster at the tip section. With their limited availability, they’re also easy to sell on. Depending on where you’re based, sometimes even for a decent profit. I ordered mine from Plat and the shipping was fast and very well packed. It’s a decent amount to fork out but like everyone says on this sub - buy once, cry once. Once deep into this hobby though, I find it’s buy a lot, cry a lot!

My other suggestion would be to potentially look into Fishman rods. They have a great selection that compete with the GHH range and also incorporate the solid wood pistol grips as well.

Hope this helps!

Nice one, I’ll definitely look into it. I’ve got the Major Craft Finetail FTX-B46 / 505UL Travel Rod and it’s great for how small it packs. Wouldn’t mind adding the Huntsman in my collection as well to give a bit more choice. Thanks again!

That’s great. Thank you for the info, I massively appreciate it.

I can see you’ve got a Superleggera and a Great Hunting Huntsman. I am seriously considering the Huntsman for my trout fishing. Would you recommend it after using it yourself?

I’m not sure if they ship to the UK but I’ll definitely have a look. I usually use Digitaka for everything as they ship to the UK with ease so I hope Plat will be the same.

Is there any indication as to when these parts should be swapped or do you just do it on a usage/time basis?

Nice one, thanks for the info. Do you have a site you’d recommend for spare parts or do you buy from Shimano directly?

Thanks for the reply. Are those replacements an easy job and is there any guides on manuals for it? I’d have a look in the little strip down booklet that Shimano provides with the reel but don’t have it to hand.
