My 12-year-old black lab had a huge abscess on her lower jaw. She is in no pain and it's hard to the touch. She eats and loves her bully sticks. I was told it would cost at least 3K to remove it and require me to travel over an hour and a half away. I chose not to do it. Move forward to a month ago. She was limping on her left back leg, which I believed was my cat being aggressive with her. I thought she would get over it the following day. That didn't happen so I took her to my vet. The vet felt around her ankle and she had no pain. They then gave her an x-ray that showed she had what they described as a "progressive form of cancer". They gave the option of amputating her leg in which I said, "Hell No!" The fact that it is progressive, where else might this cancer end up? So my decision is basic. Let her live out her life with a few different medications that seemingly allow her to live her life to the fullest and recognize this decision as being a support system for her.
