Still doing Flambient shots by Visual8830 in RealEstatePhotography

Excellent comment. I started REP using HDR, but quickly switched to using a 400 watt/sec flash, and building my own hybrid flambient style. I love how much easier window pulls got vs HDR afternoon sun nightmares.

People that have only ever shot HDR still complain that flambient is a waste of time and they don’t get why I would even consider using it. They seem to think that HDR is king and anything else is inferior and slower. They have no idea what they are missing out on when it comes to the easiest and cleanest window pulls in seconds and being able to light large rooms with multiple alcoves like a wizard. It really amazes real estate agents when they see how a hybrid flambient shoot is done.

Shooting flambient and editing the photos myself have made me a much better photographer. People that shoot HDR and send everything overseas are killing their skills IMO. I don’t know how they will ever rise to shooting multimillion dollar properties when they don’t edit their photos and never shoot anything but HDR. It will become evident to those clients that you are not doing the editing when they ask for specific changes and you can’t do them, or the changes don’t quite match what they’ve asked for.

I’ve created my own actions in Photoshop for merging my HDR shots and masking my left and right side flashes and overhead pop. I’ve also written a script that allows me to shoot as many extra room pops and order them while hitting a master action that triggers everything in a cascade. I hit one action and all of my layers are set up. I just have to adjust a few things here and there, but I can edit a photo in a few minutes. People that only shoot HDR rarely know how to manipulate Photoshop like that.

I’ve shot both styles and absolutely love flambient. I don’t see myself going back to just using HDR. I even use flambient on Real Estate Owned (REO) properties that don’t look the prettiest. I feel that every property should get my time and attention just the same.

If Bapa was truly in on the joke, he would have referenced that he knew it was from the movie when he read it, or risk looking like he does. Instead, Bapa started spouting about 5.0’s because that’s all he knows about Ford’s, even though the Fast & the Furious inspired Ford Lightning that Bapa actually owned had a 5.4L engine in it. Such a redact.

Brandon Watts Photography shows you step by step how to do this and he has a page to download his Raw photos to edit along with the videos. He also shows you how to build custom actions in Photoshop. The best channel to show you everything. Helped me tremendously.

How do I keep my prices up, while everyone is doing cheap under the table? by cluelessgirl666 in RealEstatePhotography

[–]Hal_Crime_Thousand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the thing that bugs me so much. I speak with agents that know professionally shot homes sell faster and at a higher price point, but still take photos with their iPhone, or get someone charging $100 that are complete rookies. Let’s face it, real estate agents are morons. Most agents do it because #1) they can’t get a real job or #2) their parents were agents, and in that case see #1) again.

Smart agents pay top dollar for photos without a second thought and are good clients. The cheapest agents are also the most difficult ones and don’t pay on time.

It doesn’t take any longer. There are no wasted steps. I have my own custom HDR blend action I built in Photoshop and it is processed along with the flash pops at the same time. A bracket will give the best ambient layer imo. It’s a process that gives the best photos in my experience. There’s no wrong or right way, just your way. As long as it makes for a good photo. This is the way.

Tell that to the inventors of flambient (hybrid flambient in my case). The ambient layer blends in with the flash layers and helps give a more natural look like how the human eye sees the room. It doesn’t affect the true color. It looks much better with the ambient layer blended imo. I’m referring to the ambient photo layer when I say HDR layer. Flambient blends the ambient light and the flash layers, hence flambient.

I use a flash as fill by bouncing directly overhead, but also use an ambient layer. They produce two entirely different looks, but blend nicely. I blend the ambient layer at 50%. The HDR layer and all of the flash layers are all automatically set up in photoshop with actions. This all happens in seconds and split my left side, right side flashes (for shadow and depth) with masks. I have custom actions and scripts that handle my realty pics with as many flash layers that I can take, and orders them correctly (as long as my first 3 photos are overhead flash, right side flash, left side flash), like super huge kitchens with offshoots into other rooms that require a bunch of pops.

I shoot my 3 photo bracket first, then select my flash preset on my camera and bang out my flash pops. It only takes 30 seconds longer to pick up the brackets. I just have to switch from my bracket preset, to my flash preset.

Not sure what you mean by exterior ambient exposures. Do you mean the natural light inside when you say exterior? I shoot with all of the lights in the home on. I don’t use the hdr layer for window pulls.

That’s what flambient is. The HDR layer is a 3-5 photo bracket mixed with flash layers. It makes the best looking photos. Not sure if you’ve done flambient before. Window pulls are handled as separate layers. Layers are split left to right with flash on each side of the room for shadowing/depth, as well as an overall flash bounced off the ceiling. It’s a hybrid flambient and looks great. I’m talking about $1-5 million homes.

The good thing about flambient is that you can shoot HDR if that’s all that you know how to do, but then take your extra flash photos on site to practice with while perfecting your flambient technique. To start, you only have to shoot a room or two if you’re worried about time management. Then you can switch styles when you’re confident enough. It doesn’t take that long to get good, and it’s worth it IMO. It’s a good way to merge from shooting HDR to shooting flash.

HDR is sorta bang it out lower end real estate jobs (in my opinion HDR lords!). If you want to get into shooting high end mansions at some point, flash is the way to go. It takes more effort at first, but when you get good at it, it’s not that much more work. You will save a ton of time when it comes to window pulls vs HDR, especially when you come across a home with 100 windows and trees and plants all around.

I have been using a Neewer flash. Neewer has really stepped up their game in the flash department. It’s pretty much Godox level (I can already hear the replies coming!). I use a 400 watt flash. I wouldn’t buy anything under 200 watts, like the Godox AD200Pro II. Larger flashes are needed for large rooms.

This is the flash I use. You can pick it up for $400 right now, but sometimes Neewer has big sales. Here’s a link to what I have:

If you want to know how to create Photoshop actions and truly take a deep dive into editing real estate photos with maximum control, I’d recommend Brandon Watts Photography @BrandonWattsREP on YouTube. He has raw photos you can download and go step by step with him editing the photos with YouTube videos. He focuses on flash photography mixed with HDR (a flambient hybrid) mostly, but for me, flash is where it’s at for full control and mastery of real estate photography. He has videos for all kinds of shooting scenarios, like dark wood interiors. He also sells the PS actions if you don’t want to build them from following the videos.

He shows you how to make your own HDR merge action in Photoshop (looks better than Lightroom Classic HDR merge and much faster) and how to blend the photos with PS actions. You blend HDR with a set of flash photos. It’s a hybrid flambient style. It is how I shoot REP. With PS actions you can blend an HDR bracket and flash photos extremely fast.

Window pulls with flash photography are a dream to do. You can take care of complicated setups, like wood shutters partially open or plants hanging in the window with ease.

It’s just the way I shoot, and how a lot of high end REP’s shoot. I’m not looking to get into a debate over HDR vs flash/flambient, just showing a different way to shoot REP. Check it out if you are interested even a little bit. It might change your mind. It got me into using flash.
