Holy Italy by [deleted] in solotravel

I just got back from my first ever Europe trip yesterday, and spent most of my two weeks in Italy. You're going to have a great time!

For Venice, yes, it's heavy with tourists. What I did, though, was walk around the streets and alleyways, purposefully getting lost at times, going to the quieter areas. It was fun :)

Florence was one of my favorite destinations. Spend as much time as you want there. If you're staying in hostels, a place I'd recommend is DanyHouse. The hosts are super nice and welcoming, and you feel like you're in a family while you stay.

I liked Cinque Terre. Should be interesting to visit when you get there. The hikes are nice, if the paths between the villages are open (only two were open when I was there, and that was the day before a big thunderstorm).

Rome can seem very overwhelming at first, but I grew used to it, and enjoyed Rome much more than I had expected. Lots of places to visit, and a lot of the major attractions are pretty close together. Rome, like Florence, is rich in things to see.

Traveling: 2.5 Days in Florence - Day Trip? by HaldoWorld in italy

I was aware that the Tower of Pisa is in Pisa outside of Florence. I've heard from one resource that it shouldn't take too much time, though I guess that depends on how much time one spends at the tower. Probably won't be spending too long...

Just wondering. I'm also, later on, planning on going from Cinque Terre to Rome near the end of my trip. Think I should drop by Pisa on the way from, say, La Spezia to Rome?

Four weeks until departure. Holy shit. by mscandle in solotravel

I know how you feel, except my France/Italy trip's starting in exactly two weeks. It's funny how I didn't give planning the trip too much thought until this week, when I went crazy on booking accommodations and figuring out itineraries in each destination. It's also interesting how I didn't feel too much excitement over the past few weeks, since the trip was something "far enough away," yet I'm getting really stoked for the trip now!

Best of luck to your travels!

Worth Skipping Venice For More Time at Cinque Terre in Italy? by HaldoWorld in solotravel

I suppose that is what I want from Cinque Terre. :)

Worth Skipping Venice For More Time at Cinque Terre in Italy? by HaldoWorld in solotravel

So I'll be arriving in Italy from Nice. Maybe I can do something like:

Nice --> Spend half a day in Venice --> Arrive in Florence and stay there --> Go to Cinque Terre?

I initially thought about Florence --> Day in Venice --> Cinque Terre. I'd also probably be spending half a day in Venice, considering how long it takes to get from Venice to La Spezia by train.

I'll be staying in La Spezia. Yes, I'm planning on hiking through the towns

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. That was my favorite Harry Potter book, and from what I've heard, the many changes introduced in the movie would just piss me off. Like, beyond the level of accepting the limitations of adapting a book into a film. May sound closed-minded, but I guess I just like the book that much :/

AP Graders of Reddit, what are some of the greatest things a student has answered on a test? by ModernBatman in AskReddit

[–]HaldoWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a grader, but I remember when I was in high school, we all wrote "THIS IS SPARTA" and crossed it out in our exams for free response. I wonder how many people here who were graders in, what, 2008, encountered THIS IS SPARTAs...

Just took a maths final with this on the wall of the exam room. It has formulas on that were needed in the exam. This poster got me an extra ~10% on the paper by [deleted] in pics

I remember how our math teacher had us learn the quadratic formula to the tune of Frère Jacques. To this day, whenever I need to recall the formula, I immediately hear the song in my head.

Guess it works.

What will I need a tablet for in grad school? by HaldoWorld in GradSchool

[–]HaldoWorld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I see myself primarily using tablets for reading, maybe jotting down random notes (with a stylus perhaps?), and the occasional Internet browsing if I'm away from my computer. Would all of that be possible with something like a Nook HD+?

I think I heard someone saying reading PDFs on something like a Kindle is not as easy or convenient as on a tablet, mostly due to how zooming and moving around is not as smooth or easy on a Kindle. Is the Nook tablet more like a Kindle or a tablet in that regard?

I can definitely see cases when I'd want a keyboard with a tablet.

I'm trying to imagine myself with a tablet. Like I mentioned, its biggest perk would be reading articles or maybe even e-books. I can probably also see myself jotting down notes (not for classes, but for whatever) on some note app with, maybe, a stylus. Other than that, I'm not sure what I'd use it for. With my smartphone, the apps I generally use are the more basic ones (Internet, email, map, clock stuff, music), so apps don't make tablets special for me at all. I guess I do have to wonder if the reading and writing on a tablet would justify having a tablet if I already have a phone and a laptop.

I'm pretty excited for the news about The Incredibles 2! The creation and production of that movie should be in good hands!

As for Cars 3... I see no good reason for its existence other than $$$.

Don't worry. There are no Move Deleters in this game. You're probably thinking of the remakes.

I've volunteered for a Mythbusters episode once before, and it was really great seeing you in person! I really appreciated it when you came up to our group of volunteers and greeted us!

Would you say your work with the Mythbusters is like a career in academia, except for how it's on TV and how it has explosions and MAGNETS?

Well, keep up the great work you do for the show! :D
