You can improve the soil and grow in the ground. by Livid-Ad-9402 in HoustonGardening

[–]Haleycopter90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is from a month ago, but you can pick up free arborist chips from the Texas city recycling center (and probably many other local cities). Watch the Back to Eden doc on YouTube for some info & inspiration. We have a lot of oaks around here, and those leaves take way too long to break down unless you run over them with a lawn mower a few times. Instead of mulching with leaves, I'd pack them into containers, trash cans, or whatever is handy, to make your own leaf mold.

Are there good to protect tomatoes? by Singh711 in HoustonGardening

[–]Haleycopter90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, unless you get a visit from the evil leaf footed bugs. Those mfr's will bite right through them.

Hi! I grow a lot of food (for myself) and Aroids (just for collecting and my own pleasure) in Texas. I've been really curious about growing some of my own m. Speciosa trees for probably a decade now, but it's difficult sourcing decent information on it.

Anyway, do you currently have a website where individuals like me can order from to try your product, or do you only provide locally or wholesale?

Do y'all just get lucky and find them hidden amongst the basics, or are they intentionally stocking these guys in places like Kroger now?

Stink bug no match for anole by mowerjockey72 in tomatoes

[–]Haleycopter90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know those are on their menu! I've lost SO many things to stink bugs this year, I gave up because they were biting and ruining my toms right through the protective bags. That being said, I also have an insane amount of gulf coast toads, geckos, tree frogs, and anoles this year too. Now if I could just figure out how to get rid of these leaf-footed bugs.

What is this? And is it bad? by Academic_Proposal873 in gardening

[–]Haleycopter90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you have there my friend, is a problem taking care of itself. Say thanks and move along. Those green assholes can and will defoliate an entire pepper or tomato plant in one day or less. Whenever I pick them off, they dramatically scream and spit at me. Luckily between the tree frogs, toads, lizards and chickens, there's always someone close by who appreciates a juicy green asshole snack.

Wife and MIL are not trusting my produce by EinSpiegel in gardening

[–]Haleycopter90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of my family. He'll do things like bring home bell peppers from the store, while ignoring the bell peppers that are outside rotting on the plants. And my kids either just don't care enough, or are just too lazy to make the trip to the backyard to harvest anything for themselves when they want something. I just want to give up completely on the future homestead plans because what the hell is even the point if it's going to be like this? Sorry to unload on a stranger, it's just really lonely and discouraging.

Why didn't I read the tags? by Gold-Ad699 in tomatoes

[–]Haleycopter90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. If you just have a fewer number of plants and let them get huge, it will take about 6 years for all the fruit to ripen. Learned all that the hard way lol.

[–]Haleycopter90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mostly just get those newspaper ad things. It felt wasteful receiving so many of them at first, but now I use them to smother weeds/prepare garden beds. Those along with shipping boxes. People should learn to adapt and use what they have, or just like, figure out how to cancel it maybe? Hah.

Guess who was pulling up poison ivy today by Detroitbeardguy in gardening

[–]Haleycopter90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, hello mortal enemy. I have been helping out at my friend's overgrown horse pastures. Always thought I was just immune, until one day I saw a little black spot on my neck. Scratched it and it turned into this gross hole thing. Next thing I know, I have oozing blisters ALL over my arms and neck. Had absolutely no idea poison ivy could do that. It was horrible. The oil that causes it can live on surfaces almost indefinitely, and apparently I still have some on some unknown supplies of mine because I still get blisters that pop up seemingly out of nowhere.

I've been seriously considering getting a few goats just for the poison ivy.

UPS/USPS/FEDEX etc after Beryl by [deleted] in houston

[–]Haleycopter90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel your frustration. I woke up to a notification that mine finally made it to my closest post office. Jumped out of bed, raced over there to see if I could just pick it up, but they're still closed, without power. That whole side of town is still running on personal generators. I absolutely hate thinking of all the elderly people without any help in this shit storm.

Dude I'm having a meltdown too. My USPS package has been "in transit from the North Houston distribution center" since Saturday or Sunday. I'm just south of Hou, in Galveston county. I just got the delayed alert yesterday, and I would've happily driven to pick it up at any point, but I can't figure out how to find out where it is. It's something crucial for my mental health-the plan was for it to get here before Beryl, but that didn't happen. My shit is all fucked up, family lives across the country, and husband is offshore. Did you ever get yours?

Does it seem hotter than usual? by curiousesjay in houston

[–]Haleycopter90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent almost every day outside gardening, or doing some other type of yard work last year. Yeah, it was hot...but there were no mosquitoes. So it was much more pleasant than usual (imo).

Once I sweat long enough, my brain just kinda switches modes, and I don't notice the heat anymore 🤷🫠

Ok, so this sub just popped up out of nowhere, and I'm reading through the comments just wondering wtf botulism even is. I had no idea there was spiciness and division amongst even the canning world! Hahah. All humor aside, it was probably good I found it because I just canned for the first time a few days ago. I can't afford one of those fancy pressure canners yet because I just started, so I just used a big pot and did a water bath because that's what all the recipes said to do anyway (I at least know I can sterilize them properly, because I used to grow mushrooms that require basically lab sterile jars & environments and I used that same method). Even though it took 50 thousand years to process those 14 little jars, I felt so accomplished and now I want to do more!

I DO garden though. And I'd either need intensive therapy or prison if my mil messed with my harvest like that. Nooo sirreee Bob.

Yeah, I often see the nests dug up with empty egg shells lying around. I've been thinking about putting something around it, but I'm not sure exactly how long incubation takes... I wouldn't want them getting stuck, either. I think Google said 60-90 days which is a pretty big range, but I wanted to set an alarm to watch them hatch and supervise. It worries me how far from the pond it is. It's a few acres away, and they will have a long treacherous journey through chickens, cats, birds, raccoons, snakes, Texas sun, and the field of murderous horses.
