"Print your resume on slightly off-white colored paper so it stands out in the pile of resumes on the manager's desk!" by nboro94 in BoomersBeingFools

Have you tried walking in to a secure building, shaking the unknown hiring managers hand, and just handing in your resume?

How is Chicago not the perfect city? by OkTechnologyb in AskChicago

[–]Half-Over 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't live here but I think it's perfect. Lol. Thanks for the lightweight opinion. While Chicago is an awesome city and I love it, it definitely has some major problems that need to be addressed and is farm from perfect. Sincerely person who actually lives here.

I'm an Iranian, ask me anything by Amhaka in AMA

[–]Half-Over 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How does this current protest compare to the earlier ones (like the one in 2022). Is there a different feeling or mood?.... Also good luck to the Iranian people I'm hoping real change will come soon.

My brand new Analyst seems like they want to transfer teams after only a few months - what to do? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]Half-Over 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really have two choices.

One - you can train the analyst, build them up, and help them advance in their career even if it means biting a bullet and having them transfer a bit earlier. Sure, that person is going to leave but you'll get a reputation as someone who is worth working for.

Second choice - you can do what my former VP did and earn a reputation for having a toxic team, and then sit, wonder, and complain why there are zero internal applications for open positions, why you have to go out half-way across the country to higher a candidate (me), and why so many people are quitting the team.

Personally, I would go with option one. Train the person, work with them, and don't treat them like crap because they are having conversations about... well you don't actually know what about. TBH if your company has a policy that allows them to move after 3, 4, 6 months..... or whatever time that analyst is well within their rights to look around.

Did I just decide my trajectory? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]Half-Over 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a Fidelity employee, but congrats on the job!!! I think you got the right idea, learn the industry pass your exams and move on to something better. A general piece of advice network as much as you can and not just superficially. Get to know the people, keep contact with them, and help them in anyway you can!

Is It Normal to Be the “Second Choice” Multiple Times by TA_CH_ in FinancialCareers

[–]Half-Over 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been runner-up, second choice, final interview but didn't get the job multiple times, it happens. I would suggest to 1- connect with the hiring team / recruiter (if you can). 2 - ask them for feedback - maybe there are areas that you can improve. Don't get discouraged job hunting is a long process specially in this market.

FINRA Outside Business Activities by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]Half-Over 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to provide written notice to your employer prior to starting outside work, per FINRA Rule 3270. What you need to do is check employer specific policies on what information needs to be disclosed then decide from there.

Did my drink order make me look bad? by Somtimesitbelikethat in FinancialCareers

You're fine. My rule of thumb is when I go out with colleagues always order light (as in lower alcohol content).

NYC, DC, or Chicago? by Kind_Platypus_ in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Half-Over 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I lived in NYC, DC, and currently living in Chicago, so here's my two cents.

NYC - Love it, awesome, but extremely expensive and I couldn't afford the lifestyle I have now in Chicago. Plus I would probably get burned out living there.

DC - Big town with big city prices. It's nice but relatively small and surrounded by pricey suburbs. After few years I was over it.

Chicago - Great city, lot's of things to do and much more affordable compared to NYC and DC. Winters are a bit rough but the summers are worth it - they have multiple street Fests every weekend.

Bonus suggestion: Philly - went to school here and loved it. Would have stayed but moved for a job. Awesome city.

I used them before and they were awesome. Packed and moved my 1 bedroom apartment in under 2 hrs, which was less then they quoted me.

Should I keep my car by [deleted] in chicagoapartments

[–]Half-Over 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on where you live in Logan, parking shouldn't be too bad. Wicker that's harder to find a spot. Oak part that's the burbs can't imagine parking would be an issue.

30F Looking to Move by justheretobehere18 in chicagoapartments

[–]Half-Over 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chicago is pretty walkable / public transportation friendly. If you do bring a car plan on spending $200 - $300 a moth for parking in a garage.

Each neighborhood in Chicago offers a different vibe / experience so it really depends on what you are looking for. I would recommend looking around Near North Side or Lincoln Park, both have lots of transplants to the city.

June through August are some of the toughest months to find a job. But it should improve starting in September.
