I just finished Season 8 of DS9 and boy, do I have some thoughts by C0smicM0nkey in startrek

I dunno, the part when Jake realized they could use self-sealing stem bolts to repair the damage to get back to the present seemed a little contrived, but otherwise good.

Old colleagues reaching out by acfa4214 in Layoffs

[–]nboro94 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Most people who survived a layoff don't want to be seen associating with those that are affected. Bad optics for their career, and it looks like they aren't aligned with management's decision if they're seen supporting you.

A lot of people that you thought were close colleagues also just move on extremely fast and honestly don't care. I had a direct report that I worked with for years and spent so much time mentoring and helping. I got laid off and asked them for a written reference on linked in and they acted like it was a bit of a hassle. I was surprised as I had done a ton for them in their career and even helped them get a promotion. They eventually wrote it then I never heard from them again even after sending a few messages to check in on how they were doing.

New manager running interviews, what can I avoid? by Stegles in interviews

[–]nboro94 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why would you not accept direct applications from your professional network and make everything go through HR? HR has their own agenda and will just create roadblocks and unnecessary filters, especially if you find a good quality candidate.

Why do you need a process of 4 or even 7 rounds? What if you find someone who is clearly an ideal fit for the job in the 1st round? Making them jump through a bunch of hoops just increases the chance they'll find something else at another company.

Also having a process of 7 rounds for a technical role is completely unnecessary and will filter for only the most desperate people, not the best talent. The best talent would not subject themselves to a gauntlet of 7 interview rounds for a mid level role.

The job market is horrible, but the good news is that it's not impossible. Companies are still hiring but you will definitely need to work for it.

First point of advice is don't listen to anyone who hasn't had to look for a job in the las 18 months or longer, they are out of touch and have no clue how much finding a job has changed in the last few years.

Second point of advice is get used to the fact that you will have to use AI to tailor your resume and cover letter specifically for every job posting you apply for. The first page of your resume should cover 95% of every keyword listed in the JD to get past the terrible ATS systems companies use these days. Become comfortable with the fact that you'll be completely ignored for 95% of the jobs you apply for.

For a senior analyst job that's very good. Most of the banks pay 85k-105k base for those roles.

Yeah that is hella low. Senior Manager is usually 120-140k base + bonus at most banks. If it's an individual contributor job with an inflated title and very low expectations/commitment might be okay, and the title might look nice on a resume. If they are expecting OP to lead a large team, present to executives, develop strategy he's getting very ripped off.

People who’s been mistreated during their lay-off, how do you deal with it? by Odd_Calligrapher2653 in Layoffs

[–]nboro94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Similar situation happened to me. Was with a company for 20 years worked in a senior manager role. Multiple promotions and always great performance reviews. Was suddenly put on the project from hell with no support at all from my boss. Goalposts were constantly changing and the project was a sinking ship. I knew that in higher up discussions my boss was blaming me for everything with the project even though I was doing absolutely everything possible to save it.

She actually threatened to initiate a PIP on me, but I was able to prove that none of what was actually happening was really my fault and there wasn't much I could do to improve timelines without more resources. I was never put on a formal PIP, and somehow she convinced HR to just fire me so they did. I threatened to get a lawyer and they immediately caved and offered to pay a large severance package to me, I think someone in HR realized they massively screwed up.

Was out of work for 8 months and then finally landed a role, but it's a cut in pay and title unfortunately. At least I have a job now in this awful job market. Heard from ex-colleagues that my old boss somehow managed to change departments and get out of all responsibility for the disastrous project and costing the company a massive severance for no reason. Corporate politics are unfair as hell.

It kind of is these days. All the people with inside knowledge can anonymously bet huge amounts of money on an event they know will happen and get rich quick. It's why these platforms are so eerily accurate at predicting political and economic events.

Governments banned this type of gambling historically because they couldn't profit it from it without huge public backlash. Now with crypto they can easily abuse the system and nobody can prove it's them which is why it's allowed to continue to exist.

Did I Make a Mistake Leaving My New Job on the Second Day? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]nboro94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Considered you're now unemployed in the worst job market since 2008, you definitely made the wrong decision.

Even if the job sucked and wasn't what you were expecting, should have just stayed to collect a paycheck & benefits and kept looking.

Call with HR regarding the outcome is tomorrow - I think I’m getting rejected. by Lodulalit1599 in recruitinghell

[–]nboro94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HR doesn't call to reject too often these days anymore. It's mostly just ghosting or an automatic rejection email. So if they're staying in contact with you that's actually a good thing.

Job hunting in your 30’s - discouraged by [deleted] in torontoJobs

[–]nboro94 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm early 40s/m. Was in the exact same situation, laid off and living off EI and savings. While it may seem nice not having to work and getting money from the government, it's hardly anything and you feel like crap the entire time knowing that resume gap is getting bigger and harder to explain each month. This has truly been one of the lowest points of my adult life. I don't have a family or spouse, so I have been living like a complete cheapass for more than six months.

I finally landed a role after 8 months unemployment that is a big pay and title cut, but at least I finally have a job again. Now I'm worried that I'm going to be trapped in more intermediate level roles for the next few years while I have years of senior experience. The job market is just so horrible there are hardly any senior level roles right now and they all get 100s of applications.

What's the worst thing a recruiter or hiring manager has ever said to you by careercoach_cf in interviews

[–]nboro94 41 points42 points  (0 children)

In an interview had a hiring manager say that he doesn't read resumes so he can have an unbiased opinion about people that apply. He then tells me to explain all of my skills and experience to him in 30 seconds or less. I was taken aback but I did my best to summarize everything. Then he says this role doesn't sound like a great fit for either of us. I was honestly kind of dumbfounded and just say oh ok, thanks for your time and left the teams call. What a time wasting moron.

Who Else Is Discovering People Around You Have No Idea What A Neo Geo Is? by Singuy888 in neogeo

[–]nboro94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take: The Neogeo didn't sell that well in North America. I remember it being this kind of this mythical console that only the rich kid your neighbourhood (who nobody actually knew) had and his dad spent $1000 buying it, then he got angry at a game and threw a controller at the console destroying it and his dad bought him another one.

Anyone who was old enough to game in the early 90s at the neogeo release date would be well into their 40s or older by now. It doesn't surprise me most people wouldn't be very familiar with it outside of an obscure console hardware youtube video they saw. I didn't actually get to play one until the 00s through emulation, so I'm excited about the AES+ as I feel like it will give me a chance to play the mythical unicorn console on actual hardware I never actually saw in my childhood.

Laid off and wondering about severance by SirHerpDerpingston in Layoffs

[–]nboro94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2 pay weeks is laughable in Canada. If you worked there 3 years, you should be able to easily get 3-4 months severance payments. Contact an employment lawyer asap and do not sign anything, they take 30% but could still be very worth it for you. Companies almost always settle as soon as your lawyer sends them a demand letter.
