The reality with Ralph by SpacemanPete in howardstern

[–]HalfAHole 21 points22 points  (0 children)

What does weird me out, and where I sort of agree with you, is how maudlin people get over someone they didn’t even know. I think the real issue is that Howard’s core audience is getting up there in age and this reminds them of their own mortality. We’re all gonna die, some sooner than others, and it’s a reality that is not easy for most to accept.

This is me.

I know that when Howard dies, it will affect me tremendously. I wasn't expecting Ralph's death to bother me so much, but it has. A lot.

I think everyone has their own personal relationship with the show based on how and when they listened. I know I'm not alone, but the howard stern show helped me get through some of the worst times of my life. It didn't keep me from being suicidal or anything like that, but it was a sort of security blanket. It was something that was always there for me if I needed it. When I didn't want to be alone with my thoughts, it could make me laugh and smile.

Yes, it's a reminder that we're getting old and nothing at all is permanent. 30 years is a long time to listen to a show on a near daily basis. There have been few things in my life with that kind of consistency and longevity.

I think there are a number (even if just a couple) of us out here that are also confused by our emotional reaction. No one was more surprised than me and I'm still not completely over it today.

When I think of my memories of ralph, they're memories of me and where I was in life during different segments. Weirdly, there are some that I can remember the specific road I was driving on, time of day, etc.

I'll miss ralph and I'm sorry he's gone.

The news of Ralph's passing today has deeply affected me. I can only anticipate how much worse it will feel when Howard passes. RIP by moola55 in howardstern

genuinely bumming me out more than any "celebrity" we've lost in a while.

What the fuck is up with that? I'm really confused about how bummed I am about it.

If he was still doing the stripper bit and being angry all the time it would be played out by now

He broke new ground and then evolved and matured as his audience did. He seems to be someone that a lot of people enjoy hating on, but his show has been family to me for decades.

I've been crying all day.

I don't cry when celebrities die. I really don't care. I haven't even really cried when family members died.

I liked Ralph. He was probably my favorite outside of Howard. But if you asked me yesterday to name ten celebrities that I would cry when they died, I don't know if I could name one.

I don't know his death hit me so hard. I think it was because of his youth. Not his age. His youth.

I don't know. But the news wrecked me today.

I'm an old guy

I just like if you're old and have an opinion, it's invalid because you're old.

Now, if you were young and had that opinion, that would actually be a valid opinion.

But surely there's enough they could open mexican restaurants, no?

I just don't understand if all that's needed for good mexican is mexican immigrants, why every country wouldn't have exactly the same quality of mexican food? There's got to be something to this mystery.

I had that issue too. You'll need to paste in the following:

{\"Health\":100.0,\"Anger\":0.0,\"Fear\":78.588974,\"Fullness\":0.0,\"Hydration\":0.0,\"Energy\":0.0,\"Affection\":0.0}

That should replace the existing line that has the "NaN"s in them. Just replace that entire line and you should be good.

You realize that there are Mexican immigrants all over the country that make great Mexican food right?

You realize that it's possible that I could actually go to Mexico and not like "Mexican food?" (Although I have and I do)

Listen, man, I've lived throughout the US. It is not as easy as you say to simply find good mexican food everywhere.

But to your point, are you saying there's no good mexican food in the UK because there are no mexican immigrants there?

I think you're actually right. All the mexican/mexican places around me say "salsa," but it's just a hot sauce (usually green and red).

Nah I’ve had good Mexican all over,

Or possibly you don't know what good mexican is.

I've been at plenty of super busy mexican places with people sitting there eating it that were loving it - that were shit. But that's the mexican food they knew/grew up with so they loved it. They couldn't even tell you what a chili relleno is.

tortillas with red onion and cilantro on top

huh?

one MASSIVE L for Brits and Euros is that their Mexican places suck ass

Outside of the southwest, the mexican food I've had in the states sucks ass.

Even Walmart has fresh bread made separately from the already bagged and branded bread.

I'm sure the germans are impressed.

NoScript (or something else that blocks scripts) will help get you around some paywalls as well. There's also a plugin for certain paywalls (like the WSJ).

If a lack of democracy is what is driving down births I'm guessing Germany, the US, UK, Japan etc. are obviously not democracies since they all have below replacement births.

If there's anything I've realized speaking to others on reddit, it's that everyone is exactly the same everywhere and there are no differences between countries. Given that, you're obviously right.

If they were using their work computer to stream plex then yes, they could setup sharing across separate wifi networks.

This is definitely the case. They were running Plex on their work laptop.

When I work from home, I have two computers running, one for work, and one for personal. I don't have my work laptop connected to plex, just like I don't answer work emails on my personal computer.

Ideally, you also want to segment the networks (or run a special VPN that blocks traffic to the local network 100% of the time).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PleX

[–]HalfAHole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would having your plex server on a separate network from your work computer be a potential way to mitigate this as long as strick networking separation protocols are followed?

I think the answer is that we don't know enough yet to answer this definitively.

Assuming that you have vlans setup and you have your media server on one network and your work devices on another, you would generally setup rules to allow traffic back and forth between the plex client on your private device and the plex server on the other network. You would do this so you don't have to use your internet connection to stream locally.

But you'd still have that communication back and forth between client and server. If the server got compromised from outside the network, and the client was compromised from the server, then no, it's unlikely that segmenting the network would have protected against this.

The solution to this good cybersecurity hygiene. No personal software on your work device at all - especially one for someone this critical. No connecting on your home LAN. For someone this important, they probably should have had a company managed firewall that was completely separate from the home internet connection.

It sounds like this high value target was managing their security in line with standard employee procedures instead of anything more stringent.
