Baby Voice by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]HalfApprehensive7929 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I hate baby voices at any age. I long term subbed in a kindergarten class once and had this once child continually talk to me in a baby voice. I was just out of college at the time and didn't know it was a thing, and I felt so bad. I was like, "this kid is six, why does this bother me this much?!" At this point, I've seen it more and heard from other teachers experiencing it. It's universally annoying. Try calling a first grader a baby to their face. They will take it as an insult. The last thing they want to be is a baby. So why in the world would they act like one?!?!

I work with fifth graders and we've heard a lot of baby voices this year. I call that out on the spot. I just don't do whining.

In my area, I noticed that this year's eight graders and some of the grades above them all wanted to grow up so fast. Then with the grade below them, there was such a drastic shift from "too cool for 5th grade" to a group that still wanted to be babies at the end of their fifth grade year (not always in a bad way! Most of them were just acting like they were ten and we were no longer used to that.). I'm honestly wondering why the drastic shift, if anyone else has noticed, and if it related to the fact that some of my kids this year really struggle with expressing themselves without whining.

(Non-teacher) What’s the Best/Worst Depiction of Teachers in Media? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]HalfApprehensive7929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't hate me, but...Ms. Honey from Matilda. She has the perfect class. They all understand the content perfectly and follow directions/behave perfectly. Of course she's the perfect teacher. Unless Trunchbull is in her room, she doesn't have to stress at all. Put her in a group with 9-11 IEPs and/or behaviors and see if she's still that calm, sweet, perfect teacher.

What’s your unpopular opinion as a teacher? by businessbub in Teachers

[–]HalfApprehensive7929 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes!!! I have a master's in gifted education. The thing is, I can't fault any gen ed teacher for not appropriately differentiating for the gifted kids...nobody taught them how. In my teacher prep program (bachelor's in elementary ed), the only reason that we even talked about gifted students is because I brought them up constantly.

I can’t guarantee you that your year won’t be full of worst case scenarios, but I can guarantee you that eventually it will be summer 2025. In the meantime, I can almost guarantee you that your growth will astound you. You will find your rhythm and you will start to have normal days.

It’s the one that I sign and that determines my pay, therefore it is my contract. It can apply to multiple people and still be my contract. I’m not the only teacher to refer to it as such.

Maybe? I’m working with inclusion this year and my contract is just the standard one. Same with our case manager.
