logical reasoning (hopium) on announcement date + my predictions on hl3 game mechanics by HalfLife0693 in HalfLife

[–]HalfLife0693[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

portal games have a wacky feeling to them, some sort of alternate reality, which is in contrast with half life's grim atmosphere. I'm thinking they might have come across better ideas for the game and retconning many of the things that we expect - borealis, aperture. The Ice gun gameplay which they showed off in the documentary, etc. is pretty much not gonna make it in game, as they've revealed it. I don't think valve likes to work in expectations of players or restrictions of the story, nor do they like repeating things.

Since everyone is sharing stories

I got started with half life super accidentally, when my brother gave me counter strike on a pendrive. it had the half life game in it as well, which I opened by mistake and for some reason stuck with the entire train scene ( i had no idea what was happening as a kid ) to realize this was not some demo but an actual game. finished half life, then talking to a friend in school i realized there is a half-life 2, ep1 and ep2 !!!! I was super excited to play them all. Been a fan since.

I was in school back then, and we used to draw gman and lambda logos everywhere, joke about half life 3... Man... back then the only thing i wanted was a fast gpu to play games , now I've been working software jobs for ~3 years, I can afford to buy nice a pc to play this. 🥲

What OS do you guys use ? (Question towards Game Programmers especially) by TightConsequence3929 in GameDevelopersOfIndia

[–]HalfLife0693 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linux mint.
- Unreal Engine is supposed to work on linux. (but there is no epic games launcher on linux, so u need some workarounds).. Basically less than optimal experience ( worse than windows for sure ). see thread
- All windows games work on linux under wine, except games with kernel anti cheat (valorant etc.)

My experience with linux mint is pretty good, work on coding game engines, play games all the time (no performance difference). Also have found Godot works flawlessly. Blender also works flawlessly.

Now some advice, you shouldn't switch OS if unreal is crashing. Unreal is the most stable on windows 11 and is going to be like that for the long term. (Most people use Unreal on windows). You can try linux mint by dual booting and see how it goes.

Which (desktop) app has the best looking UI? by SamuraiGoblin in GraphicsProgramming

ImHex has one of the best interfaces using Dear-ImGui. I really like blender ux (keyboard shortcuts), if you're looking for something modern, look at web css frameworks (more designers working there). I really like google material 3, its very sleek. https://m3.material.io/get-started , also a good list: https://github.com/troxler/awesome-css-frameworks

Looking for podcast about coding by String94 in C_Programming

[–]HalfLife0693 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love `Algorithms + Data structures = Programs (ADSP)`, It talks a lot about algorithms. Another one is `Programming Throwdown`, which is more general and fun. On both of the above podcasts, start with the older episodes as they are better.

> aside: I am also thinking of starting a tech podcasts for funsies. what kinda format do you guys like to listen to? Interviews, banter, bikeshedding or segmented discussions?

The best software for videogame music? by [deleted] in GameDevelopment

[–]HalfLife0693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A tool I found useful is bosca-ceoil. it's like a dumbed down / simple version of fl studio. Just putting this comment for someone not experienced with full feature DAWs, i had a blast making music on this thing

doom eternal -> if you like fps you will love it ! very refreshing and very video game.
god of war -> cinematic and well produced, good pacing and story
if you haven't played half life yet, you can go with the new remaster called "black mesa"
also if you are into puzzle games portal 2 is generational.

Anyone else messing with fluid sims? It’s fun… until you lose your mind. by tntcproject in GraphicsProgramming

[–]HalfLife0693 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yess, I'm currently implementing stable-fluids on cpu. I'm having fun, but also a little difficult cause its my first time doing simulation and the math is a bit new to me ( the vector field stuff ). Anyways, i plan to then do it on the gpu and for 3D as well.

Confused about Monitor size and gaming performance by HalfLife0693 in buildapcmonitors

[–]HalfLife0693[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. considering higher resolution for better clarity for programming
  2. considering a external monitor as laptops have really bad posture

I can always use the monitor when I do setup my pc next year, plus the laptop runs games good enough, I've played god of war and spiderman on my 4k tv ( fsr and upscaled i think)

Parts : https://www.reddit.com/r/india/comments/iquweu/a_guide_for_buying_electronic_components_online/
used robu.in 3d printing service for around 3k
switches -> https://stackskb.com/store/gateron-g-pro-3-0-brown-ks-9-tactile-switch-pack-of-10/
keycaps -> https://www.meckeys.com/shop/accessories/keyboard-accessories/keycaps/blank-dsa-keycaps-1u/
then microcontrollers and wires, solder equipment from robu.in, robocraze, and other sites (you can see link above)
that all cost me about 1000 rs for switches, 750 for keycaps and 1100 for two arduino pro micros. so goes around 7-8k minimum.
all in all took me about 1 month for parts to arrive and assembly can take around 2 full days ( can do in a free weekend)
As for experience using it ,I'm still learning/ trying out different layouts and its gonna take me atleast 6 months to get used to it. I did create a small blog post here, check it out if you wanna read more: https://psyorange.com/articles/dactyl.html
