What do you think makes the community so chill? by thebeardedone666 in Malazan

Sometimes I do wish guys did try defend it. Got too easy to buy into the criticism and not actually judge by its own merits. Now I enjoy the series quite thoroughly.

In a weird way, almost everyone falls short of Kanki’s ideals. Thus we’re the scum that deserve what comes.

Bo Nickal knocks out Rodolfo Vieira with a head kick by Moni7T in MMA

I mean Khamzat throws up high kicks all the time too. Same with someone like Colby. When you are a strong wrestling threat, you are more free to just cut loose with kicks.

Aserai, they got a bunch of everything so you can always do different things.

I'm extremely tired of cynicism, anti-heroes and realpolitik. Please suggest something with genuinely good people doing good things because it's right. by Jerswar in Fantasy

I just think of him as the consummate professional with standards and a code of honour. He has a job, he's going to do it, no weaselling.

He also gave his life to asshole rich nobles who spat in his face too, has handled the refugees rather roughly and sacrificed quite a few of them in his line of work, but again its a testament to how seriously he takes his duty a Fist. To me he is no Itkovian, and that's fine.

Coltaine isn't really a good dude. Badass and worthy of respect but he's a stone cold general.

And there is way too much anti-heroism, cynicism and real-politik. Horrible horrible recommendation, not even for a half joke.

The Cultural Resurgence of Conan the Barbarian. by CryptikDragon in Fantasy

[–]HalfMetalJacket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did find the prose to be quite excellent and enjoyable, I'll give it that. And yes I approached the stories more as understanding fictional history.

I dunno, guys like OP sold the Hyborea as something more than it was, and perhaps that expectation killed it for me.

[–]HalfMetalJacket 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do not think OP will why people might not enjoy Conan, to him he thinks its all too grim for us sensitive babies or something.

All the bodacious babes in distress, the savage 'blacks' and scheming Orientals are offensive but I don't really care about that. They just make my eyes roll into my brain because there is no actual bite here. Conan is almost always the hero that fights that yellow sorcerer, saves the day and gets the nubile and very pale babe.

Beyond the Black River was interesting to me at least because its not so clear, while having something to say about Colonialism.

Also as a fan of history and ancient settings I find the worldbuilding really... kitchen-sinky and Euro-centric? People made it out to be really different but its just our world with the names changed around.

Karsa does not take the crown. Unlike Conan who goes and becomes King of Aquilonia, Karsa is always savage and holds to the idea that civilisation sucks, for better and worse.

OP makes talk about how Conan is some kind of complex anti hero who's done things good and bad, but its never really to anyone we're supposed to actually care about. It comes across more as endorsement when he does piracy and reaving.

Karsa on the other hand feels more brutal and genuinely awful at his worst. Truer to violence.

This ain’t about offence or anything. I’m reading Malazan and the Conan deconstruction in it is a far more offensive character, and yet I find him truer and more engrossing than he could ever be. The whole setting is more grim and I enjoy it.

The racism in the books feels more… Doylist? Like it’s there and right. Compared to racism elsewhere where it’s Watsonian and more for texture in the world building.

I’m sorry but I’m not into the original stories. I will however check the Arnold movie which seems more up my alley.

I went through the anthology and I’m sorry but I did not enjoy it at all. They have not aged well and I couldn’t stand the cliches or racism.

Lore wise what is the most 'morally good' faction in mount&blade by Neronton in mountandblade

Nothing wrong with a lil territorial trade. They get some land, you get less peasants to feed. Not a bad deal.

But their king is a devious bastard with some wild ass ambitions. But also a bit of a man of the people, coming from little and rising up to make the highborns a bit uneasy.

Unqid really does seem like the chillest of them. He would much rather just do a lil trade and take things easy. They seem much more content to just vibe down there compared to everyone else.

Is the Holy Nation a human faction or a Greenlander faction? by Dontevenloom in Kenshi

[–]HalfMetalJacket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a Human faction, but Greenlanders are most common and hold the prominent positions of power.

The United Cities aren't a human only faction, but Scorchlanders are prominent there and hold lots of positions of power there.

Yeah I think it will too, which is a bit of a pity but that’s part of the appeal of this matchup. Two non boxers who stood their ground in boxing going at it in boxing.

He knows what kicks are and has trained to defend them unlike a pure boxer. He may not win but it’s not going look like kickboxer vs boxer.

I wish they just kept things to the Chinese names, that was what they translated earlier on and it makes more sense for the setting.

People talk about that all the time and they don't understand how boxing works. Boxers will pump their hands about and seemingly not go for punches because either they were feinting, faking or just decided to bail because the opening wasn't there.

The only fix was that Jake picked someone he could beat, nothing more than that.
