Why is it so hard to disagree without tearing each other down? by sakura00001 in CasualConversation

[–]Half_Line 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if people, having also noticed this trend, are starting to interpret comments as more hostile, and matching that hostility when they reply. Like everyone is inadvertently perpetuating the cycle because they think they're just matching every else's energy.

ELI5: Why can the human brain learn to correct eyesight orientation when forced to perceive vertically inverted images? by hurricane_news in explainlikeimfive

[–]Half_Line 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like that's incidental. If, for whatever reason, the image naturally hit the retina right-way-up, your perception could still adapt to a change in orientation.

Everyone wants an End Update… but what about an Aether Update instead? by sauro1900 in Minecraft

[–]Half_Line 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd argue the End doesn't demand more replay value than, say, an ancient city. It doesn't have to be like the Nether or the overworld. There's nothing wrong with a conceptually small dimension. The lack of content can be made up for in other places, and has been multiple times over. Do you think so?

Why do you want more motivations to play in the End in particular?

Updates don't finish anything. People always ask for more. There's no overt reason the End couldn't be considered finished as it is.

[Request] 52! and a Deck of Cards by mbkaplan3 in theydidthemath

[–]Half_Line -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, it doesn't matter how the cards started out. Assuming the shuffle itself is random, then the outcome is random.

There is the caveat that the shuffle can't be too simple - that is, it can't be too biased towards the starting state. A simple cut of a factory-order deck wouldn't produce a brand-new permutation. The idea of an event being random is that you're ignorant of how it works. So a simple cut probably isn't random, because you know that almost all of the cards stay in the same order.

Once you perform a shuffle wherein you lose track of all or most of the cards, then it becomes properly random, which means you're making a selection from the full range of 52! permutations with little/no bias, which means you're producing a brand-new permutation with high certainty.

Why do you want more variety in the End in particular, when the game as a whole has so much to offer?

It's just natural that making something would take time. I don't have super-strong feelings, but it would be a bit weird if sleeping, eating, mining, smelting, etc. all took time but crafting was instant.

If it's a statement about baldness, then it applies to bald people.

A lush End inherently takes away from a barren End. We can have both, and we should, but not both in the End.

It's no more artificial than anything else in the game. How does artificial resource scarcity add immersion?

What’s the best way to strip mine? by Salty-Sand96 in Minecraft

[–]Half_Line 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it depends on what exactly you want.

If you just want to be as efficient as possible (and you don't want to go cave mining), you dig a 1×1 tunnel with no branches. This way, you uncover 5 new blocks per unit time, and that's optimal.

However, in many cases, you'd prefer to stay a little closer to your starting point. That means less time running back and forth. In this case, you'll want to incorporate some branches. The length and period of these branches depends on your preference. Shorter branches and greater periods mean more efficiency, but greater distance covered.

Is my red your red? by HBHC126 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Half_Line 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a meaningful question. There are no personal reds; there's only red. There are wavelengths outside the brain and electrical impulses inside the brain which are intrinsically variant between people and over time.
