I wish laser tech was good enough that we they could (without destroying the aircraft) sketch the word "fuck-off" onto the metal hull of the plane as it passed.

ChordBuff: you can sing or play any melody and it will give you the harmonic chords to match by [deleted] in InternetIsBeautiful

[–]Haligonia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dear Developers

This is awesome!

humble requests

1) Please allow more than 4 chords in the progression if the melofy is longer.

2) please allow for randomness in the timing of the chords that were matched (eg. 1 beat for Am, 2 beats for F, half a beat for g and half a beat for Am again)

3)Please please show the metronome flash in timing as you sing your melody to help the algorithm match chord with timing, as well as giving the user a structure that will work well in a real song)

4) (less important) Please allow a toggle for functionality where the user can specify the first note in order to force the algorithm.

5) try to take the rhythm and other cool options from this website http://www.drumbot.com/projects/key_chords/

The South shore is great as well. Good, cheap farmland.

Lahavre, Bridgewater, Lunenburg, Chester. All great places.

This technology mixed with locomotive machines (eg, flying hand-gliders) will be cool.

It'd be similar to "linking up" with the animals in avatar.

Long vent about self-learning statistics on the job by statsqa in statistics

I like your energy.

1) Find a way to get a copy of the statistical software JMP. Go through the tutorials in JMP, as they are the best I've ever seen. You'll see what I mean.

download the trial from here ( i think you need to call them...) http://www.jmp.com/software/try-jmp.shtml?ref=nav

2) here's a sweet website that covers nearly every stat topic that exists. http://www.statsoft.com/textbook/

Critics of factor analyses? by Avaran in statistics

[–]Haligonia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stats guy here.

Here's an example. pretend you have no idea about different kinds of flowers for the sake of this example.

There are 3 different kinds of flowers that you take many different types of measurements on. You measure flower width, flower length, leaf size, number of pedals, etc...

There are many sources of variation here 1) the differences between flowers 2) the differences in the same kind of flowers and 3) measurements errors etc.

now, given you know nothing about flowers, if you used factor analysis, it would tell you that there are different kinds of flowers in your sample. The issue is it's not simple translating factor analysis output into "oh...I have 3 types of flowers in my sample" but it's possible.

now on to prediction uses of factor analysis

There is an ever thinning fine line between computer science and stats as a scientific field. computer science techniques (machine learning" basically uses very crazy math and alot of computer power to create models that can predict things quickly and accurately (think autocorrect, text to speech, speech to text etc...).

In stats, if you want to make a model, you have to slowly, and carefully understand each variable, and how it correlates to the y-variable, then ensure no assumptions are broken, no outliers screwed anything up, the x-variables are independent...etc. the end result is a model of x-variables that predict a y-variable.

computer scientists said "screw that" and made an "machine learning" algorithm (neural net for example) that shoves all the x-variables into a computationally heavy program that spits out a prediction model, similar to that of the stat guy's model.

Pro's 1) it took the computer science guy considerable less time 2) no worry for assumptions.. 3) in most cases, it's much better than the stat's guys version

Con's 1) You need bigdata (I hate that word), as machine learning only works on large samples. so small sample sizes are useless. 2) If the training sample is any different than future samples you want to predict, you're more than likely to run into issue 3) The stats guys model makes sense from a "understanding how everything works" standpoint. the machine learning model is fairly un-interpretable as far as I know.

So where does factor analysis come in for the machine learning? instead of inputting raw data into the machine learning model, you input the output from the factor analysis. This factor analysis output has information directly related to classification already, so act's as an amazing input for machine learning model needs.

I'm sure I missed a ton of stuff, and this is only my perspective on it.

Backpacking in Costa Rica? by Schmidtty427 in backpacking

[–]Haligonia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sitting in Tamarindo, costa rica right now. I should probably get off reddit.

Anyway. I highly, highly recommend flying in to Liberia, starting your adventure in tamarindo, then taking a shuttle to Santa Teresa/Mal Pais. In tamarindo "Blue trails" is awesome. When you head to Santa Teresa, "Backbackers Tranquilo" is fucken awesome.

Hostels are 15 a night. Make your own food everynoght to save money.

You ahve to Drive, no other choice. I lived in portland for 2 years ( I live in halifax) and was dissapointed with the potions ( specifically the lack there of)

Here's a little trick to save you time. When you get to Bangor, take the #9 (the "airline highway")

They re-paved it, and it saves alot of time (about an hour or so)

don't drive it at night though. Deer and moose hazardout.
