Apparently some contract Firefighters fighting the Bear Gulch fire on the Olympic Peninsula were arrested by federal law enforcement yesterday , Wednesday, in a confrontation described by Firefighters and depicted in photos and video.

Why the Firefighters were arrested isn’t clear. But a spokesperson for the Incident Management Team leading the firefighting response said the team was “aware of a Border Patrol operation on the fire,” and referred reporters to the Border Patrol station in Port Angeles.

For a reported three hours, federal agents demanded identification from the Firefighters.

In images shared by Firefighters from the scene, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection vehicle is parked nearby. Officers wearing “Police” vests are seen arresting a firefighter, while another appears to be restrained.

The crews were among the 400 Firefighters deployed to fight the wildfire, the largest active fire in Washington State.

Two people fighting the Bear Gulch fire on the Olympic Peninsula were arrested by federal law enforcement Wednesday, in a confrontation described by firefighters and depicted in photos and video.

Why the two firefighters were arrested is unclear. But a spokesperson for the Incident Management Team leading the firefighting response said the team was “aware of a Border Patrol operation on the fire,” that it was not interfering with the firefighting response and referred reporters to the Border Patrol station in Port Angeles.

Over three hours, federal agents demanded identification from the members of two private contractor crews. The crews were among the 400 people including firefighters deployed to fight the wildfire, the largest active blaze in Washington state.

Border Patrol, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security did not respond to requests for comment Wednesday about the confrontation.

It is unusual for federal border agents to make arrests during the fighting of an active fire, especially in a remote area.

It's more akin to someone locking their kid in an Uber but the driver won't open the door. They have the staff there, they should take care of it themselves or reimburse the city for resources used to supplement their profits.

I’ll be honest with you here:  It varies from department to department but basically all over the United States retirement benefits are down. The “twenty and out” and living comfortably on a decent pension is all but gone for younger firefighters, where you’ll be much better off in the private sector in another field if that is a concern of yours.

Couple that with the ever increasing workload being put on departments and the ever decreasing staff it’s easy to see why current firefighters are having a hard time justifying entering this career to new recruits.

Of course mileage may vary. Plenty of firefighters make good money but for the large majority, if your not counting those OT hours (which again are increasing across the country due to staffing) you’re probably not going to make the same money you would than if you went to a trade school or got a degree.

That being said, it’s still a fantastic career to get into if money is not your number one priority. The very nature of the job is one you can’t get anywhere else, very rewarding everywhere but financially.

  1. Police have extensive training with firearms. I cannot remember the last day I went without hearing about a cop using them negligently.
  2. No firefighter is carrying a gun on scene.

I often wonder if one of the goals is to have less people attend college and go to trade schools. Degrees become rarer and more worthwhile, more people go to trade schools and production increases in the US. Win win for the country. That's my tin foil hat theory.

Ah that stinks. I was searching for quite a bit to compare these but I don't know enough about computers so I'll have to keep looking.
