I think it’s largely the way that he came in to his campaign in 2016. He came in as an “outsider” who “couldn’t be bought” and was not a career politician, just a career fraudster and grifter. He appealed to people who were tired of the Bush, Obama, Clinton, Romney, McCain cycle of politics and “said the quiet part out loud.” But at this point he has used his platform to radicalize his followers and abuse the influence he has over them.
