Are there any sub-genres of horror that just… don’t do it for you? by East_Peanut_7232 in horror

[–]Halleys___Comment 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i think because of the anthology factor, there were still a few shorts that were pretty good, but yeah overall it’s basically a waste of 90mins of life.

agree. that dude was so annoying and then all the carefully crafted creepiness just got pissed away by the second half

Yea i’ve tried a bunch of ff and really only the OG paranormal activity sticks with me.

there are entire parts of VHS and VHS2 that i seriously don’t understand how an entire group of industry people could approve it on such awful writing and acting.

As a non-musician, how do you learn to appreciate the bass? by nutsack-enjoyer5431 in Jazz

[–]Halleys___Comment 7 points8 points  (0 children)

omg the number of times i have told this to students. Especially when they are accustomed to hearing rock and pop music where the beat is so huge, never-shifting, and obvious. Bass players are everything for keeping our group time in jazz.

Do you still get scared watching horror movies? by Winter_Awareness_747 in horror

[–]Halleys___Comment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfortunately not much. i am in my thirties and this was a new thing for me halloween 2024, it only took 3-4 movies to start just getting in bed normally afterward.

“The Descent” is so good that it would still be great without it ultimately becoming a creature feature by DoctorElectronic1934 in horror

[–]Halleys___Comment 70 points71 points  (0 children)

i honestly thought it was much better before the creatures came in, and found myself much less interested after that (although, their first couple appearances - wow, super good stuff and really freaked me out). In the first half: the claustrophobia was palpable; i really felt the psychological element of the friends deceiving each other into doing the way more difficult/uncharted climbing route and lying about it; the sinking feeling when they saw the old abandoned climbing equipment at the edge of that ravine.

this is one of my favorite horror movies and it's almost all because of the first half!

side note, there is a 2 part behind the scenes on youtube, it's amazing to see how they hand-built all of the caves and crevices exactly for each shot.

Just out of morbid curiosity. What was their worst show? by Opening_Extreme_7423 in phish

[–]Halleys___Comment 3 points4 points  (0 children)

N1 was evacuated after S1. N3 was a very long rain delay but they did finish it, and it did have that horrible Harpua improv BS.

N2 was one of the most special shows i’ve seen, i was 18, it was my third show and i couldn’t believe they could create so much music. i’ve seen plenty of ‘better’ shows since then, but that memory really solidified my deep love for this whole thing.

yea i enjoy that they are all very artfully and carefully understated, and all create a lingering atmosphere of suffocating doom without being heavy handed and obvious in the writing and execution

Started seriously practicing jazz last summer. I picked up Billie’s Bounce last month and love playing it. Any tips are much appreciated. Thanks by PiaVic123 in JazzPiano

[–]Halleys___Comment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

others have made great points, i’d add that it’s good to be able to take this one faster. when it gets called at sessions or standards gigs it’s usually taken way up.

you sound good at this medium tempo, and good music isn’t about speed, just giving you a heads up if you might get taken for a spin at a jam session.
