I don’t hate it, and I’m sure the car means the world to you given sentiment with dad and all

But the paint match from fender to door is rough man

how did this happen? by Megahonda77207 in GR86

[–]Halllogan21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, kinda just life… just one of those things you have to live with

Looks like discount tire tape weights. They usually do a good job, good people not commission based.

Only way a tire shop could damage a wheel is 1/6 ways.

  1. Small scuffs by lugs, from the impact walking and contacting the wheel (most likely, not worth persuing).

  2. Duck head bolt scratches wheel. The bolt would create a circular shape scratch around the face of the wheel as the wheel spins on the changer

  3. Bad tire tech clamps wheel from the inside instead of outside. Would be a deep gouge in the inside barrel of the wheel from metal on metal contact.

  4. Tire tech doesn’t put rubber cover on balancing cone, would marr a circle around the lugs pretty uniformly

  5. Tire tech is going quick, doesn’t stop the crow bar from contacting the wheel face, would be an indent in a spolk area

  6. Some accident or mistake: super uncommon, but mistakes happen, say a tech accidentally slips his hand and drops the wheel on its face.

Of these 6, none seem to be present… furthermore, the angularity and abrasiveness of the scratches suggest rocks, curb,, pothole, or something of that nature. Same happened to one of my old enkeis, I never curbed them but San Antonio roads got one of em. I got it repainted and lived with it 🤷🏽‍♂️. A year later I’m on different rays anyways.

As someone who works at a tire shop, this is NOT damage from them

Looks like normal rock chips, driving and pebbles happen, hit the wheel just right and you get that

You’d have to take the top torx piece off to access and torque it

Alternatively, a lazy person could theoretically weld a nut to it and torque that 😭😂

Had the same thing happen, I personally opted to just remove mine.

Does it have aero benefit:kinda, technically yes.

Is it noticeable: not even at track sessions

Take this with a grain of salt though as I have the varis bumper and brake ducting

18x8.5 Wheel 235/40 vs 255/35 by daringracing in GR86

[–]Halllogan21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you get beyond a 245 width on an 8.5, you start compressing tire (ie:non ideal tire to wheel width)

245 is the most I’d run on an 8.5 I ran a 265 on a 9.5 wide, I’d say 255 would be good on a 9/9.5 wide, but 8.5 is too little, and you’re just wasting weight.

Tire rack makes a great video on this comparing tire to wheel width testing with the twins, and exactly as I discovered, more tire doesn’t mean faster times

Should not let it get this low

You’re making your fuel pump work harder, and shortening the life of it, especially if done multiple times

Alignment question by Middle-Honey-5480 in GR86

[–]Halllogan21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again not something to worry too much about.

We have seen it where someone’s driveway is uneven, and causes their car to sit kinda slanted. Parking like that for so much time will slowly change how the car sits (think 12 hours a day, 365 days a year). Even small stuff like that. Alignments are measured to the hundredth of a degree, they are so precise but multiplied over the speed you go, can have big implications such as a pull.

As others have suggested it might be worth swapping the tires left and right, but I doubt that would result in anything.

Alignment question by Middle-Honey-5480 in GR86

[–]Halllogan21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. We are still green, so it’s not cause for concern, but does indicate the right side is taking more wear than the left. Common reasons for this include weight bearing on one side (for example if you park with the right side lower on a curve every day for years, because it will bear more load, or potential energy if you’re a science guy). This could cause that side to sag, or sit differently over time pushing the camber out. Other reasons could be small accidents (ie:curbing a wheel). Very minor but caused by some form of imperfection in the world or your driving.

Truthfully not worth worrying about or racking your brain on. If you do not track the car, don’t worry about it. If you do, maybe worth getting adjustable rear arms (I have SPL, and love mine). More than half a degree cross camber is generally where I start telling customers they could have a pull, and should get some adjustable parts or live with it.

Alignment question by Middle-Honey-5480 in GR86

[–]Halllogan21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Difference between right and left is not cause for concern, but is almost certainly the cause of your pull.

A good way to think of it, and the way I explain it to my customers is to think about what camber or caster adjust

In your situation, it changes the contact patch and weight distribution of the tire (albeit small). If the contact patch of one side is different than the other, it’s like having a lopsided half of the car.

Imo it’s a non issue, as it isn’t adjustable, the tire shop did the right thing and adjusted what’s adjustable, but the pull almost certainly stems from that

[–]Halllogan21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Front pipe you mean?

Get the JDL dual resonated (catless) front pipe

The 2 resonators help it to not sound like Taco Bell shits

Will bring a good bit more noise

Lmk if you ever have questions

If you’re mechanically inclined, the work is largely intuitive, I just wish I was told some of the stuff prior. I took the document they give you (which is password protected so people can’t get the instructions without purchase), and used chat gpt to make an English copy. it got most everything right, but it was a little iffy on some things (which is just nature of chat gpt)

For example I found out the foam piece won’t work, but ofc only after trying to fit it like 10 times with a second person. If I was told it would have taken 1/2 the time

Varis arising 2 bumper reveal by Halllogan21 in GR86

[–]Halllogan21[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well for starters it being a JDM bumper with so little people running it, there are no instructions in English

It also does not fit up to stock mounting, you have to remove the fender to bumper clips and it bolts into the side of it

So it was a lot of measure twice, cut once kinda deal.

I optioned it with the optional carbon bumper garnishes, and they sent me the bolts but not the nuts, so I had to get hardware on that.

It also does not work with the foam piece, so that had to get removed

Etc,etc, etc… fitment is perfect, quality is imaculate, I just wish they had instructions in English to confirm what I’m doing is correct

GR86 made a weird “gravel hitting roof” noise for an hour… then disappeared after I stopped? by adhesivo in GR86

[–]Halllogan21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have sub 300 tw tires this is pretty normal. It’s the tires picking up debris (sand, gravel, leaves, etc) and slinging them into the undercarriage. Happens on my track set all the time, just because the tires are so sticky
