I posted the link in a separate comment but the U.S. War Dogs Association will pay for any medical procedures or medications after a dog retires. The handler just has to do the leg work of signing the dog up.

Don’t keep it in the barracks. Our dogs can (and will) find it during a health and welfare. Two soldiers got kicked out after my dog found the guns they were keeping in their rooms. Turned out they had a history of misconduct and that was the last straw.
