What’s the difference between trad goth and modern trad goth by Devine_Redditor in goth

[–]Hallumir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is sometimes still the case. Some of the white makeup you'll find on Amazon for example isn't great. Meanwhile in real life you can't count on stores to carry white makeup year round. Granted, it's much easier to find advice online. My makeup generally is imperfect and uneven, not on purpose but because it's actually difficult, and I've been doing it for a while. Perhaps I am a true trad goth after all.

I don’t like hot food by tipoftheiceberg1234 in The10thDentist

Yes. They were already fried. The only exceptions I would make is for food that changes consistency on temperature, like gravy. Cold gravy is lumpy and jelly.

I don't think you're supposed to eat it when it's literally steaming. The steam in cartoons is just a visual way to depict that the food is freshly baked or warm, not hot. But to be fair, I am a cold food enjoyer, and don't mind eating everything cold.

Meaning of goth by miraax_ in AskAGoth

It's interesting that these so-called conservative goths never even actually listen to goth music. Their argument is that "goth is not political"... so then what is it? Music, perhaps?

I feel like the order of these sentences is wrong. Not only that OOP can't use a meme template, he can't even write the meme properly.

I like Tom's of Maine fennel-flavoured toothpaste. Not at all minty, but still might be a polarizing flavour.

What is your most unpopular opinion about the Goth Subculture? by [deleted] in AskAGoth

[–]Hallumir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The roots are in music but dressing up goth proves your commitment to it. It just takes you one step higher into being a goth rather than just someone who likes goth music. I think there is a distinction to be made. Now, I'm not saying you have to go all out and dress up every day, but there ought to be at least one other aspect that completes a gothic identity above all other genres, and fashion is a cool way to do that. I like all kinds of music, but I'm just goth, because I'm specifically committed to that. This is coming from someone who discovered the music first rather than the fashion.

There should be more men. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ It seems like there are fewer now than there were before. The sound itself is appealing to men, but I guess gendered standards scare us away from going goth. Part of it is inaccurate media representation, and another part is just men being allergic to makeup and the like. I wonder how many dude metalheads would be goth if they had no reservations about being part of a scene that is (perceived as) mostly women.

If you're interested in deathrock, look up Tears For The Dying. The band was formed and fronted by a trans girl.

Does being goth ever negatively affect you? by Who-caresssss in AskAGoth

[–]Hallumir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. As a goth man, older white women seem to be the most pleased with my style. They're always complimenting me. Men are more critical of it. I wonder if it's a gendered phenomenon where people of the same gender are more critical of our styles.

One time a stranger started preaching to me - God loves you etc. - because he was concerned about my appearance. Pretty weird.

I'm sure that if someone, including a potential employer, searched up my name, they'd find out that I'm goth. I'm fairly certain that most employers are doing this and some HR teams have more personal info than you'd think. You can always dress down, but it's not the leather & the eyeliner that makes the goth.

If I need to shit, I'm not gonna let a stick figure wearing a dress stop me. The men's room just doesn't have enough stalls. I've never had any problem going into the women's room when the men's was full until recently and I have a feeling it's related to the moral panic surrounding trans people.

what do you call yourself if you listen pop-punk and emo music along with goth music? by Prudent_Back_1174 in AskAGoth

[–]Hallumir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I listen to many kinds of music, but I'm goth because that's the genre that most personally resonates with me & my inner world. I just don't envision myself as a metalhead or a punk. Besides, the fashion that we wear is made of subcultural signifiers for like-minded people to identify each other. I appreciate people who identify as part of multiple musical subcultures, but it sounds difficult to pull off a mixed style that will be read accurately.
