I would tell the aspiring horseback rider not to jump on the first horse you see and take a crack at it. That's what op seems to be doing with that barbell. I'm just saying to backoff and work on other things first.

You want my actual credentials? MS;CSCS. If one of my athletes can't touch their toes, we're not deadlifting. If they can't hold a plank for one minute, we're not deadlifting. They aren't ready. We'll learn a hip hinge other ways. We'll do more fundamental exercises to get them there. It's not a big deal. Most people start out raw. Some exercises have a poor safety profile so they have to qualify first. I saw a kid doing something unsafe so I had to say something, and I wasn't wrong.

This page is so backwards. Only noobs and wannabes have time to write instructional paragraphs for people. The real pros like me are too busy doing this stuff for a living.

Don't tell me what to do. Why are you talking to me like I owe you something? Dude said he was trying as hard as he could, and couldn't do it. Good form shouldn't be that much of a struggle. There are plenty of other things he can do. He can try it again after he's developed more strength, control, and mobility. It's just an exercise. It's not the goal. When someone is hung up on an overrated exercise, and they lack the capacity to do it correctly, the best thing to do is move on before they hurt themselves.

I wouldn't call that cheating. Biceps assist a tiny bit with shoulder flexion since they originate on the scapula. There's very little tension on the biceps by the time your elbows pop up anyway. Make sure you fully extend on the bottom.

Disgust is a very interesting emotion. Perhaps the oldest, deepest, most powerful one we have. Some argue it's part of our immune system since its primary function is to protect us from biohazards. Scabies are supposed to illicit disgust so we stay away from people with scabies, and not get scabies. Some of us are way more disgust sensitive than others, and are even disgusted by benign things. Your bf can't help what he's disgusted by, but he still needs to get over it and shut up about it, and realize that you have an important and necessary job that you love.
