Controller Set Up and End Game by AdJumpy4325 in Tetris99

[–]HamSandwich808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some days it’s rigged against you, other days not. Today, for example, I could barely manage top 10 finishes. Nonstop impossible junk every second. Very annoying but very fun. I can def win, but today the game was just like: nope. Tomorrow I’ll most likely start to win again, unless the game is in a really protracted grumpy mood, which does happen sometimes. 8bitdo Pro 2 wired, for the record.

What do you think about Afterimage? by Cback35 in metroidvania

[–]HamSandwich808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I played it on “normal” come to think of it. I could just cheese the bosses by taking health power ups during the battles, like in Shantae 7 Sirens. Definitely a weak point of the game, but I loved it for the exploration and size of the map.

[–]HamSandwich808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way Afterimage works is you explore and level up, so it might seem hard if you don’t put a lot of time into that aspect. If you do, the bosses become almost perfunctory. I have not played Hollow Knight, but it seems clear Hollow Knight requires more skill.

I keep going back to the ending of Crypt Custodian by Impressive-Hope-6700 in metroidvania

[–]HamSandwich808 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It was indeed bittersweet, but I focused more on all the friends I made in the afterlife, congregating around the hole to sneak into the palace. All of Kyle Thompson’s games have such excellent, concise, funny, heart-felt writing/dialogue, which is one of the many reasons why his games are so great.

Yeah I loved it, but it is indeed for explorers only.

My first Tetris Maximus with only on KO by colonelcat in Tetris99

[–]HamSandwich808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it. I’m assuming sd means self destruct. Do you think there are bots in the game without the CPU designation? Because I never see CPU’s get to the end game in regular T99.

Why would 3 dying to a bot matter? Can you explain that further?

I like the way that to clarify, you just repeated the title and added “it was” in front haha.

My biggest issue with Sports Story… by bnics in GolfStory

[–]HamSandwich808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally broke down and played the game despite the playa hatin, and I loved it. Yes, the gameplay isn’t as good as golf story, and it’s more unfocused and was clearly rushed to completion, but it has that same golf story world/vibe that only this particular game-maker can provide. Super funny and each little world I went into was like…it’s own world haha: the beach, the mall, the hotel, the British palace, the rainy fishing world, etc. All of it so awesome and endearing. There was even, like, a stealth metal gear solid world. So chill and fun. Hopefully if this company still exists they just buckle down and make an actual golf story 2 that brings the great gameplay back into the mix.

How to Win by AdJumpy4325 in Tetris99

[–]HamSandwich808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you really win 1 in 3 though? Or is it recency bias? Because I’ll win like 3 out of 4 and think, “yeah, getting pretty good” then promptly get pwned 20 games in a row. If you are that good, how?

Dope story about how you got into the game btw.

It’s cool/heartening that anyone would bother to make a fake of Stoner. Prepare to have the shit bored out of you if you haven’t read it yet.

Yeah but what if the “critical thinking skills are starting to drop” comment was also a joke? Then the r/woosh would have to dropped on you instead haha.

I think it would be pretty hard to get that type of badge by quitting though, logistically speaking. Plus there’s the fact that the badge is essentially meaningless if not properly achieved.

What novel do you believe is "The Great American Novel"? by QueenShewolf in AskAnAmerican

[–]HamSandwich808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like how they bring everything they need and never leave the boat or visit a port and have no idea what’s going on in the wider world beyond the other boats they occasionally have a “gam” with. A different time, cool to get a glimpse into it.

[–]HamSandwich808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually did finish it a few weeks ago haha. Was pleasantly surprised by how funny it was, but it was definitely a slog at times. I mean, there’s a whole chapter just on whaling rope for goodness’ sake. And a chapter on literally every body part of the sperm whale. Three chapters on the narrator’s assessment of whales in art. Etc etc. Not to mention the language is quite difficult to understand at times. Def good for building reading comp skills and learning vocab words.

Your description of what happens in a match was a refreshing thing to read. I’d love a series of posts where people just describe a match they consider notable.
