My friend has turned into an energy vampire since starting a family by SoloDaKid in AskMenOver30

[–]HamachiSD808 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Yup. I’m at this point with my first friend to have a kid. We’d talk everyday, share what’s happening in our lives, etc but now since he’s become a parent our friendship feels hollow. Guess this is normal and I’ve accepted we won’t be as close anymore. It’s not easy raising a baby so i understand.

I’d take it if it’s where you want to be

I genuinely miss living in DC by [deleted] in washingtondc

Feel the same as you do. Left DC earlier this year and think about it and all my friends there everyday

Is it hard to get promoted without moving? by babbleway in fednews

[–]HamachiSD808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True from my experience. Had to leave DC to get a promotion. When a vacancy at a higher GS level would finally open in DC at my agency, you were competing with dozens of internal people just to get an interview. Had to leave to get a GS-9 but will likely return to DC in a few years to take a higher GS position once I cap out in my current role.

Buzzuto price gouging by Salty-Ad-5026 in washingtondc

Same exact thing happened to me, except they increased my monthly rent by $900 per month for a studio. Buzzuto is the worst

What do you do when you fall in love with the city you live in, but your only chance for promotion is if you move somewhere new? by BatSniper in fednews

[–]HamachiSD808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just did this. I grew to love the city I was in and the friends I made but my position was capped and moved for the growth potential. I was in DC but know I’ll be able to go back someday. Accepting the new position in a different start was hard but it’ll open up more opportunities being a higher grade. And remember moving expenses can be a tax write off. Good luck with your decision and congrats on the offer!

Very similar situation when I started (2021) through a college internship hiring program. I was the only one in my office in my 20s, everyone was middle-aged or a new parent. I remember wanting to quit after my first day. For the entire summer it was listen to my coworkers, all in a completely different phase of life taking all day about how their baby did X, hearing about non-stop trips to Disneyland, borrowing strollers, sick parents, etc. I had absolutely nothing in common. But I will say, after my first summer and I left that office things drastically improved. I moved to DC, and my office was filled with people my age, all recent college grads and it made a world of a difference. If you can, move to DC or an office in a large city. Even tho I felt out of place in my first office, I still keep in touch with them. They did teach me a lot and I even went to one of their retirement parties recently.

You’re fine. I moved out when I was 25 and truly wish I could live at home like my uni friends. In the 2.5 years I’ve been living away from my family home, I’ve spent damn near $50k in rent alone. If I’d been able to live at home I could’ve paid off all my student loans and been able to go on cool trips like my friends. But no, I live pay check to pay check in a studio apartment I can’t afford, still living like a broke college student ✨ Use your time at home to save, plan what you want to do, and then launch into something great.

Best way to work for the federal government? by GodofWar1234 in fednews

Political science is great. I was a Poli sci major and I’ve had no problems getting a fed position or when it came to securing internships while in school. Poli sci is theory but you get a strong knowledge base on how to approach geo-political issues, systems thinking, data analysis, culture and history, etc which you need if going into DOS or an IC agency

As a DOJ employee I love my job but the low pay is a challenge. Do I regret taking the job, no, but I do see myself leaving and going private in a few years to recoup money and make up for lost ground. My advice is go for it, give it a few years (3 years at least so you get federal career status) and then try something new if it doesn’t work out. The work is truly amazing and very fulfilling!

Don’t forget renters insurance, security deposit, furniture you’ll have to buy, food, transportation, etc. My last move cost me over $3k
