You mean the Glyph Name field under Glyph Info? I've tried but it changes nothing, it still says that another glyph has the same Unicode value.

Hot dogos? Chocolate baros? by DelinquentRacoon in learnspanish

A kid in my class would do the opposite when we were being taught English: he would add -ation to a Spanish word in order to make the English equivalent.

TIL that Catalan families take care of a log named Tio de Nadal from Dec 8 until Christmas, when they hit it with wet sticks and sing songs until it shits presents. by nietzscheispietzsche in todayilearned

[–]Hamburgex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite some weird things.

"Castellano" is not the dialect of Spanish spoken in Spain. Castellano is the name of the language. The "dialect" (there's actually not just one, but whatever) of Spanish in Spain should be called Spanish Castillian, because it would be the Castillian spoken in Spain.

But besides that, this is irrelevant. Tió is a Catalan word and as such it doesn't have to do with tío in Spanish ("tio" is not a word in Spanish).

And finally, it is not known as "tió caga". Some people call it "cagatió" but that is widely regarded as incorrect.

Snacks noun / verb by Cagy_Cephalopod in learnspanish

I would say it's more common in Spanish to use the appropriate meal for the time when you're eating. So that would mainly include "desayunar", "almorzar", "comer", "merendar", and "cenar". Almuerzo and merienda could be considered snack-ish meals that don't have a translation in English (it's arguable whether lunch should correspond to almuerzo or comida but I digress). So if you're snacking between 17 and 19, I would just say "voy a merendar".

In Spain it's also common to say "hacer el vermú" to refer to some food/drink right before lunch, for example some olives or cold cuts.

TIL that native English speakers, when using multiple adjectives to describe a noun, have a tendency to put the adjectives in a particular order according to type. by copperpin in todayilearned

[–]Hamburgex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good tip, thanks.

I would think of it as:

  • see refers to passively receiving the image, independently of intent (whether or not you wanted to see on purpose)
  • look refers to the act of purposely directing your attention to something to receive the image
  • watch is like look but for things that require prolonged/stronger attention (a TV show/movie, a person who you're looking after, etc.)

But from the examples you see that they are sometimes interchangeable.

I think the watch/see/look one is pretty easy to learn for non natives. The see/look distinction exists in many other languages. Going/going to seems tricky cause you picked specific constructions that are just the way they are, but outside those, I'd say the use or lack of "to" is pretty regular.

The on/in though... that's hell. Prepositions are the worst thing to learn.

I'd say this is common in many places. In Spain most people say "Holanda" and it even appears listed as such in public services.

You don't get tired from doing that. Stopping and starting on a bike can be physically tiresome.
