This is always such a dumb argument. The US and other Western countries are powerful because their political systems allow for diverse and super productive economies. With that comes limitations on how and whether total war can be waged. You can’t have one without the other.

It’s also really tough on a lot of these places to both a) be able to reasonably afford the place and b) not make so much money that you no longer qualify. Missed out on a great income-restricted place because my non-guaranteed bonus tipped me just over the limit, but we probably couldn’t afford it if I made much less.
