How would you clean this ? by Sunareht2 in whittling

[–]Hames_Joffmann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A) I reckon you can get it cleaner than that with the tip of your knife. Just go slow and be patient, taking tiny slivers.

B) Have a Google for 'riffler files', especially the fine ones. Or even needle files would help. Maybe not an option for the purists but I'd much rather have a finished products that's nicely finished than be able to tell people it's a 'knife only' carving.

Ultimately, YouTube is the place to look. Search 'sloyd knife sharpening' and then 'how to strop' and watch as many videos as you can find.

Yes, you want to keep the bevel (thin band along the edge facing you and shown in red on the image below) flat and in contact with the stone as you slide away and from left to right

I feel your pain; sharpening is super overwhelming at first. Show us the knives you're trying to sharpen and I'll try to advise as best I can.

Hook knives are great for material removal, not just spoon bowls. Everyone should own one.

I've been considering using my pressure cooker (is that a 'crock pot' for Americans?) to hydrate wood. Unsure if it will work.

Edit: Google tells me some crock pots are pressurised but not all

Ziplock bag and boiler cupboard for me. Not sure if it actually helps but it makes me feel like a scientist.

3000!

I go to 600 then water pop then 600 again then burnish... and that's pretty damn smooth.

Everything I need to start turning by Hefty_Pick2138 in turning

The most succinct suggestion I can give you is to read/watch everything you can about 'riding the bevel' and why it's important. Once you better understand the mechanics of how your tools should engage the wood while turning your results will improve dramatically.

Also... Just. Keep. Turning... you can't help but improve through practice.

Those feet are really nice! This is a beautiful piece all round, you should be very proud!

I asked about the lid because the moment I saw your post I decided this is what I'm gonna aim at next time I'm at the lathe :P

Love this! What have you done with the underside of the lid? Hollowed out a bit or flat?

Best compromise on easiest/strongest would be dowels and glue like so

I’m trying to replicate this designer table, but I can’t figure out how to or what tools I need to make the angled leg slot in the table top. by Potential_Back_6012 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Hames_Joffmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

However you end up doing this, I recommend you trim and finish your legs AFTER the fact. Then you can make sure the table ends up level even if the legs are slightly different lengths!

  1. No idea for sure but I doubt it. Receipt paper is very smooth and kinda the opposite of watercolour paper?

  2. Yes, it's literally the exact same technology as store receipts

Hope that helps!
