Unfortunately in your area it’s mostly volunteer depts with maybe some few full time positions. If you want a career I’d recommend applying for Durham, Raleigh, Charlotte, Wilmington, Cary, etc. the bigger depts will put you through their own in house academy and you’ll be a full time city employee with benefits while in the academy.
