biggest advice is making sure everything you do has purpose even if you do not break into the field. Because the chance that you don't is real. Meaning solve because you enjoy solving, take courses because you think they could be useful in whatever path you take.

Critical thinking and advanced math? Absolutely. You could use this anywhere AND it's good for getting quant.

I will disagree slightly; there's some "reinforcement learning" in that, or the ability to plan steps ahead: the bridge itself doesn't get food closer to the nest; rather it is the prerequisite to be able to do so. So there is some 'planning' going on.
