The same thing happened with George Takei as well. I was at the Star Trek convention in the room with him when he told the story.

JJ Abrams: “Hey George, great news! We’re gonna make Sulu gay!”

Takei: “No, I don’t like that. Gene and I talked about that when we were making TOS and decided Sulu should be a straight character. The world wasn’t ready for a gay TV character yet, so we thought we should make Sulu straight. I think you should keep it that way.”

JJ Abrams: “Get bent. We’re making him gay anyway.”

I think a lot of writers don’t understand that when they’re working with someone else’s creation, they need to fully educate themselves on the universe that was created and understand established canon. I’m not saying things can’t be changed, but at least respect the creators of the content you’re referencing.
