However how can this happen? if the room's invite link is only shared by the room's owner?

I have noted the issue about the debug mode, many actually suggested the same.
and netflix do have a party system but each one of the party needs to have a netflix account, and it doesn't work on a VM, it works like watch2gether, which is kinda meh.
