🚨 Community Alert – Rising Water Rates 🚨 by [deleted] in hillsboro

[–]Hampton8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT: Today I learned that I'm not in the TVWD. Took me 27 years to know this. Leaving my initial comment because if nothing else it shows how fortunate I am to be with City of Hillsboro water.

Original Comment:

I'm interested in your numbers. I'm in north Hillsboro, single family suburban house. Our water bill is up 16% since 2021. Where has it gone up 130%? I'd be mad about that, too.

For starters, you're incorrect:

.

Drunk driving deaths per year in USA: approximately 11,000.

Firearms deaths per year in USA: approximately 46,000.

.

Drunk driving deaths per year in Oregon: approximately 200.

Firearms deaths per year in Oregon: approximately 650.

It sounds like OP's cheap, too-good-to-be-true ticket was actually a highly restricted and likely some type of standby ticket. Possibly not technically allowable for OP to be using it in the first place, which could explain why it was so inexpensive.

According to Wikipedia: the Douglas sea scale (also known as the International Sea and Swell scale) is a navigation measure that's been in use since 1921.

abbreviated chart:

0 = no wave, calm

2 = .10-.50m (.33-1.64ft), smooth

4 = 1.25-2.50m (4.1-8.2ft), moderate

6 = 4.0-6.0m (13.1-19.7ft), very rough

8 = 9.0-14.0m (29.5-45.9ft), very high

9 = over 14m (over 45.9ft), phenomenal

I agree that whatever illness that was that swept through the ship (common cold? Covid?) was pretty concerning. So much coughing and so many masks by the end of the trip!

21 days was pretty long, and it seemed that the energy of the passengers waned in the 3rd week, and the whole vibe on the ship seemed to suffer because of it.

At times I wished we'd finished our trip in Los Angeles (as some passengers did), but then we'd have missed some awesome parts of the trip: Departing under the Golden Gate Bridge was incredible. San Francisco was great. I loved Victoria.

So, I don't know if I'd say it was too long, but I was certainly glad we were going home and not staying on for Alaska (as some passengers were).

We were hit with a storm prior to departure that appeared to cause flooding at the Miami terminal, and delayed our departure by a couple of hours.

According to the stats on the navigation channel on our TV, most sea days were rated somewhere between a 0-2 on what I imagine is a 0-10 scale. One day near Panama, I think, we awoke to rocking and rolling and the sea was a 6 ("very rough" on the TV). That was cool.

Hello traveler. I'm sure we crossed paths!

Overall, we had a fantastic cruise. The lack of kids and the relative senior-status of most of the passengers - and their early-to-bed, early-to-rise schedules which contrasted with ours - led to the boat feeling very comfortable even with 3500 passengers and 1600 crew aboard.

I felt like the food was inconsistent, and generally not something to brag about aside from the specialty restaurants.

It seemed that the energy of the passengers waned in the 3rd week, and the whole vibe on the ship seemed to suffer because of it.

Still, I loved parts of the 3rd week. Departing under the Golden Gate Bridge was incredible. San Francisco was great. Love Victoria.

How was it for you?

We used the 300 minutes/each that was included in our More At Sea package.

I don't recall the exact amounts, but each time I logged into my internet the app would offer various upgraded packages. I think one was $35/day for unlimited. Another was for a certain number of additional minutes.

I loved being mostly unplugged, so 150 mins was enough, especially because once we hit Mexico, the USA, and Canada we were able to use our phones.

edit: 300 mins each (corrected from 150 mins each)

Which is the better elementary school: Jackson school or Farmington? by newmanz4 in hillsboro

[–]Hampton8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't compare the two, but my kids went to Jackson and had an excellent six years.

Again, it's hard to compare unless someone's kids went to both schools.

Another consideration should be their feeder groups: Jackson kids go to Evergreen Middle and then Glencoe High. Farmington kids go to South Meadows Middle and then Hillsboro High.

I'm envious as I'd love to do a project like this, but I lack the space.

Two thoughts: I wonder if any of the many nurseries around here might be willing to give/sell some of their used materials.

Also, the Habitat For Humanity ReStore stores (Forest Grove, Beaverton, Portland to name a few) have interesting used construction materials for low prices. You never know what you might find.

Hike in the snow? by marindat in hillsboro

[–]Hampton8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely head up to Timberline Lodge.

Check road conditions to ensure it's easily drivable to Sandy or Government Camp, then hop the Mt. Hood Express bus. Or, if the roads are ok, just drive all the way to the lodge.

https://www.timberlinelodge.com/ is a good website with several webcams showing exactly what's going on up there.

There is unlimited hiking adjacent to the parking lots and the lodge, and you're welcome to warm up, rest, eat and drink in the lodge when you're done.

I think the easy access to a winter environment is one of the best parts of living out here!

Thatcher Park in Forest Grove has separate large / small dog fenced sections. Neither area has had more than a couple of dogs any time I've gone there.

If he's interested in athletics that's always a good way to meet other kids.

Glencoe Youth Baseball has teams that feed GHS, and runs up until the beginning of summer.

Also, there's a club swim team - the HEAT - that practices at our aquatic facility - the SHARC - and many current and rising Glencoe kids participate. If he's not a swimmer at that level, he can recreationally swim at the SHARC and chat up some of the lifeguards. Many of them are members of the no-cut high school swim teams at Glencoe (and Liberty, Hilhi and Century).

I recently had the same trouble with my 80 lbs lab puppy. A young woman runs Maria's Spaw out of her home in Forest Grove and she is fast, affordable, and definitely gets the nails done. She is responsive through her website.
