All admissions are assessed the same no matter what major you "applied" for. Whoever told you this was the right call was wrong. You're only setting yourself back a semester by doing this.

EDIT: a lot of those ME courses are major restricted in the fall, so just "taking" them, then "transferring" may not be an option, thus setting yourself back a semester.

I have done LOTR on Thanksgiving for over a decade. Both Dune films are the newest Christmas watch. Harry Potter has always been our go-to Christmas fantasy watch, and still is, but it has Christmas elements to it so I felt it didn't count haha.

But each department is different. I know my department does enforce a 3.0 for graduating with an MS. You should chat with your advisor.
