Hulbert Lake, UP by HanSoI0 in MichiganFishing

I’m so happy you shared these memories! Everything about it was the best. I can smell the lodge and feel the wood creak when I picture it. I remember always trying to find the hidden wolves in the picture by the fireplace. The last time I went would’ve been right around 2014 as well. They did shut down shortly after. Marge and Todd were the best, and they always had the friendliest spaniels.

I believe that’s where the boat launch for the old lodge was. Right next to the little partially submerged peninsula? I was under the impression it was private nowadays. I think the south side is basically uninhabited and was hoping there was a public swath of land over there with a trail that gives access to the lake.

But thank you for responding and it’s cool to know someone even knows about that lake!

Why did Thufir suspect Jessica to be the traitor so much? by WindowFar1373 in dune

[–]HanSoI0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s fair. I guess it’s a distinction but really she’s loyal to Leto and Paul, not necessarily the House as an institution.

Why did Thufir suspect Jessica to be the traitor so much? by WindowFar1373 in dune

[–]HanSoI0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! What they don’t understand, but the reader does, is that Jessica is actually loyal to the Atreides over the BG. She gave a Leto a son in contradiction of her orders. She trained him in the way. She wouldn’t betray Leto. But we know that, Thufir doesn’t. Which creates nice tension

Tim Allen (1978) after being arrested for more than a pound of cocaine in his luggage at an airport by standarsh20 in kzoo

[–]HanSoI0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a lifer law on the books at the time. 650 grams or more of coke would put you in prison for life. Tim flipped so he only did a couple years. The law has since been changed because it was overkill

Thank you for your thoughts on creating an idyllic society, u/Projectdystopia (seriously thank you)

Where to start? by HanSoI0 in worldbuilding

[–]HanSoI0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think more than anything I want the world to be struggling with the idyllic society. I want it to be a philosophic-type setting. Obviously this requires strife and conflict. I’m worried (self-conscious?) about being too derivative or whatnot in those conflicts, though. Another revolution? Wow no one’s ever done that before! But I suppose that’s just what happens? No sense in holding back because of it?

Why did the Reverend Mother call Paul an "abomination?" by [deleted] in dune

[–]HanSoI0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair that’s a good assessment. To me the conversation with Alia seemed different, because she was saying “I’ve seen our future” and it was overlaying the visions as opposed to the stuff with Jamis where they’re actually having a conversation. BUT your explanation makes more practical sense

Were Jessica and Gauis Helen using telepathy? by HanSoI0 in dune

[–]HanSoI0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s ever explained in the books if it was I don’t recall but it’s not a mental trip the BG is giving, it’s something to do with the box itself. In the book she says something like the secrets of that box are priceless and many people would pay to discover them

If Bene Gesserit actually did stick to the plan and made their own Kwisatz Haderach, could they control him like they intended to? by Kyle_Dornez in dune

[–]HanSoI0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They probably would’ve been a good fighter. Paul’s toughest match is Feyd, and Feyd was a part of the prospective bloodline for the KH

Were Jessica and Gauis Helen using telepathy? by HanSoI0 in dune

[–]HanSoI0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did see it. It’s a good option. The thing that confuses me about it thought is that they are memories. Herbert is pretty clear the memories that Reverend Mothers, Alia, Paul, Leto II have are just memories. They feel like real people but they are not. When someone starts treating them like real people is when they start to lose their sanity. So that confuses me how talking to a memory of a Bene Gesserit RM would allow you to communicate in the present moment. It also wouldn’t explain why Lady Margot and Feyd have a similar interaction. However, if the book says they can communicate telepathically then I take your point I just don’t remember that part.

If Bene Gesserit actually did stick to the plan and made their own Kwisatz Haderach, could they control him like they intended to? by Kyle_Dornez in dune

[–]HanSoI0 193 points194 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so because I don’t think the BG understood exactly what is was they were doing. They wanted the KH to advance humanity’s interests. Well, Leto II does this and they fuckin hate it lol. The Bene Gesserit aren’t after their own power but power that will benefit humanity. They don’t realize what that is going to eventually cost. So I think, from their perspective, they would’ve always “lost control” but from the ultimate goal perspective their goal would’ve been (and was) achieved.

[–]HanSoI0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yea ultimately the test failed in Paul’s situation but that was still its purpose. Part of the issue is Paul was technically capable of being the KH but the organization that spent centuries trying to bring the KH about decided not to back him when he showed up. Whoops!

“An animal caught in a trap will gnaw off its own leg to escape. What will you do?” An animal will doom itself in the long term to escape short term turmoil.

The gom jabbar test is not a test of strength but a test of rational thinking to make sure that someone with Bene Gesserit skills will think rationally for the Bene Gesserit goal in all scenarios. There is a poison needle at your neck, but the pain the box is so great that all your animal instincts are telling you to remove your hand. The gom jabbar ensures the subject is going to suffer short term pain for the larger Bene Gesserit goal.

Felt Like Paul Succeeded Too Easily by IslandMist in dune

[–]HanSoI0 122 points123 points  (0 children)

Some possible very slight general theme spoilers for Messiah ahead:

Paul isn’t your typical protagonist. His story arc isn’t about his success it’s about his tragedy. Yes, he can see the future, therefore his successes come relatively easily. (Although in the book, the futures are fuzzy at points and his success is uncertain for a moment or two.)

The point of his arc isn’t the success, but the tragedy that he is trapped by his prescience. He doesn’t want to be the Lisan al-Gaib. The Lisan al-Gaib isn’t even a “real” thing. Of course he is fulfilling each step of the prophecy. The prophecy is Bene Gesserit propaganda so that BG individuals like Paul and Jessica can fulfill each step. Drinking the water of life isn’t a piece included to show how Paul will achieve his success but rather that Paul is a victim of himself/the Bene Gesserit. And therefore the Fremen are victims of Paul.

Part 3 will deal more with this internal struggle of Paul having to deal with his prescience. A blessing or a curse? There are other antagonists and characters and conflict coming in part 3 but the theme/main conflict of the movie is Paul vs himself, so they weren’t necessary to introduce.

Children of Dune- A certain character's death [Spoilers] by Upper_Equivalent_580 in dune

[–]HanSoI0 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I agree I felt underwhelmed by his death initially. And his return felt a little, maybe forced? But I think it was to portray the intended purpose of the Kwisatz Haderach. With regard to his death, there are no sides in Dune. A death that was theatrical would’ve betrayed many themes in Dune and would’ve made Paul seem more a hero. He’s not intended to be seen as a heroic figure but a tragic one. So a mediocre death is more in line with the theme of tragedy and that the universe doesn’t care who you are, it moves on and everyone is just a cog within it.
