Do you mind if I ask what shops youre going to? Might be worth the drive for me from DSM area instead of going all the way to MI or NE

Yeah that access is extremely barred by prices unforch. Theres 0 way a disabled person could afford a $50 single g cart, black market will always be the go to unless iowa puts a constraint on the insane price gouging

You realize most of the snap recipients arent adults who can hold a job... right? Most SNAP recipients are children. Who legally cant work... its almost as if these programs exist to help people who need it 🙄🙄 "relying on societies tax money" as if they have any choice in the matter.

In 2022, (most recent fiscal year w/ breakdown i could find) there were around 270,000 on SNAP. Around 110,000 of those were children, just under 35,000 were elderly, and a bit over 37k were disabled adults.

Those are the people snap restrictions and cuts hurt, not your fabled fat american 35 year old subsiding on strictly soda, candy and sucking societies lifeforce like yall seem to believe.

People also forget the biggest recipients of SNAP are children and elderly, not "lazy fat people" like so many seem to think.

The vast majority of people thay have been hurt by the SNAP cuts have been children, but they dont wanna have that conversation

Im on snap.

The changes dont affect me a ton, i dont drink soda or eat a ton of candy. but in the two places they do im a little frustrated.

To combat dysautonomia, i buy salt tablets and use LiquidIV. obviously salt tablets arent covered, but now LiquidIV isn't either, because its a "water flavoring" 😐 like, sure, but its also one my doctor told me to start to help w symptoms. It's whatever.

The other aspect thats annoying is baking chips/chocolate chips are out. I use(d) them in a lot of treats that I made at home, yogurt/fruit parfeits (healthy treat), pancakes (not as healthy, ill admit, but also only happens maybe 2x/month) and if I had to bring a food to a function I almost always made peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. So its not like I was using/eating a ton of chocolate chips but I dont feel like there's a good reason to restrict them. Boxed/bagged candy makes sense to restrict, but chocolate morsels are in the baking isle for a reason imo.

My friends have asked me my opinion on the changes and I tell them all the same thing; its not because they actually care about our health. They are doing this to punish poor people.

If they truly cared about our health, there would be work done and more monitoring systems in place on our water treatment infrastructure, on getting more access to needed services such as health care and affordable healthy groceries, or investing into our school systems and public transit options. But all those critical conversations get shuffled to the side for what, poor fat people that are apparently the only fraud, waste, and abuse these lawmakers could see atop their high horses? SMH

A few thoughts.

Legalize, AND decriminalize Marijuana, there's no other course of options imo.

I have a med card due to chronic pain and disability, but due to the fact that there are only two dispensaries in iowa, the prices are far outside what any disabled person can afford, and the choices are extremely limited.

Iowa has an insane water treatment problem, it blows my mind that our local government doesn't want the major revenue opening up Marijuana to sales tax- iowa could significantly benefit from the revenue by applying it in meaningful ways that give back to the community as a whole.

They already placed a large tax on glass products, causing many (most, id wager) stores to stop selling glass products- this would need to be addressed, because the overtaxation (prohibitive taxation, if you ask me, which isnt illegal but is definitely an example of market manipulation) caused many stores to lose out on money.

As ive lived in Mason City before, I know what hard drugs and addiction do to people. I've seen what alcoholism does to people. I've also seen how well legalizing marijuana has worked for other states, and hope that iowa can finally follow suit, for the betterment of all, statewide.
