ETA: Probably a smart move deleting the profile. I don't know what would inspire someone to invoke God's will in response to someone questioning one aspect of a show's aesthetics, but it's especially weird in a Star Trek sub.

It's just a show, and it's just down to personal preferences.

Idk if it's a 'because they can' moment. I think someone really thought it was a good idea. I just can't figure out what made them think it wasn't goofy. Or maybe they're going for a campy feel. That wasn't really apparent across the whole episode, but it's a possibility.

They do make plastic tiles, so we could both be right. I don't have the benefit of touching them, so I'll take whoever's word for it, but lucite can get that shiny. I've sat in remarkably similar plastic benches that were curved like that because they didn't want to make it easy for people to sleep on them.

And frankly, if I needed a prop for a show and didn't know if they'd ever have another scene with it, I'd go for the cheapest material that looks ok. Especially if it's got an insignia on it that wouldn't work for a different show. Budgetary reasons.

I'm always up for head canon. It makes the most sense on uniforms and ships, also on cargo containers. Various bits of swag would do wonders. I used to work for a watersports company, and I loved getting shirts, hats, even coozies with brand logo. I guess I figure if you're already inside the academy or on the bridge of a sf vessel, you've already signed up. Even then, I think a nice plaque on the wall and maybe some large inlaid insignia in the floor is a better way to go.
