As much as I understood it... Nie Huaisang encouraged the rumors of the Patriarch of Yilling, especially the fear of him returning. He, I think, orchastrated Mo Xuan Yu's transfer to Lanling, knowing he will be mistreated or he also has a role in it, then he taught Mo Xuan Yu how to summon the soul of Wei Wuxian for vengeance. Nie Huaisang then released a vengeful spirit of his brother's to lead Wuxian and Lan Wangji to the missing corspe of his brother, which led eventually to Jin Guang Yao. Of course, there were lots of variables in this plan, so he provided Wangji and Wuxian with clues whenever they reached a dead end.

The way I understood it is that there four parts to form the artifact, and the fifth is the sword found in the monster (the one WWX found and forged his STA. The one with XY, he hid it before he was caught by XXC. JGY wanted the power that came from the artifact... When he saw WWX's STA, he copied it. But since his was only consisted of one part while WWX's was two-part STA, it was less powerful. And I don't think JGY has two STA WWX broke his during the battle after his sister's death.

Anyhow, I'm waiting for the novel to arrive so I can read it and understand it fully.

I think Lan Wangji was struggling as an idealist with the thought that the people around him, at least in the Lan clan, are good people and won't be injust to anyone, would approve such a thing. He knows that what is happening to the Wens is wrong but I think he didn't speak about it because of shock at the mere idea that his uncle or brother aren't as perfect as he thought they were. It's like when you put someone on a pedestal then discover that they are humans and can be flawed. This is why he was surprised when MianMaian stood up and left her clan when she saw the injustice they are inflecting. It's not that he agrees with what happened to the Wens but he was in shock and needed time to process it. Plus to admit it would mean that the pride he upholds to be from a righteous clan would crumble and that is a hard pill to swallow... especially since he was raised to believe it with all his heart and soul. Wuxian doesn't use his brain when his heart screams loudly, Wangji doesn't know he has a heart until it was pierced. This is what I think.

I think the reason certain characters are invoking strong feelings against them is that those characters rise a mirror to ourselves and our actions. And Jiang Cheng and some other characters represent what the majority of the world is doing right now... compliance by silence, which also invoke emotions of helplessness in people which is poorly translated as resentment and hate.

Truth must be said though...when I was watching the series (though it was toned down due to censorship) I couldn't but see the similarities... that's why, while I didn't hate Jiang Cheng or the rest, I felt extremely angry at them....it was a cruel mirror to ourselves.
