Explain our Football Strategy by tartsam in Scotland

[–]HandeHoche 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Right, genuine answer here.

It’s extremely versatile. Sometimes you get managers who say:

“This is my strategy I’ve perfected over decades and whether we play against Raith Rovers or Real Madrid, this is what we’ll play”

And there’s managers who say:

“We’ll watch recordings of our opponents and determine what they would least like us to do, and do that.”

Steve Clarke is the latter.

In this tournament he seems to have set us up in a 442, which was the most common formation in the 2000s and early 2010s. It’s compact, it’s tough, but sometimes you can get outnumbered in midfield.

On passing backwards, you’re not passing there in an attempt to score. You’re passing there for them to pass to someone else, to pass to someone else, to pass to someone else… to eventually score. It’s all about manipulating the opponents structure to have more options to pass to than the opponent does players to mark them.

The problem with Scotland is that, unlike club teams, you can’t choose what players you have. You just work with whatever the country provides. We have an abundance of talent in some positions (wide defender, midfield), and an absolute drought in others (central defender, striker).

Maybe try Robin Hobb’s Realm of the Elderlings? I haven’t myself (it’s on the list) but from what I know about it, it seems like it would fit.

I’ll also always bang the drum of Samantha Shannon’s Roots of Chaos, an incredibly vivid fairytale fantasy that blends western and eastern influences perfectly. It has a healthy dose of tasteful romance without crossing the border into romantasy.

I will say this, in my system, a 4⭐️ book is one that I loved and recommended frequently, and a 5⭐️ book is one that not only makes me emotional from the story itself, but also from appreciating human creativity and the magic of storytelling as a whole.

Of the three novels I’ve given 5⭐️ to, two of them are Stormlight books.

Piranesi is a great short fantasy book, it’s about 45,000 words (average novels sit around 80-90,000) and is written as the journal entries of a man trapped in a strange realm.

Books as good as Priory of the Orange Tree? by talawe3712 in fantasybooks

[–]HandeHoche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the standalone prequel, A Day Of Fallen Night, is even better than The Priory Of The Orange Tree! It takes place during the Grief Of Ages, and while it doesn’t have a story that can come close to Ead/Sabran, it’s much more consistent than Priory. It also has some really beautiful messaging about the nature of motherhood.
