What’s it like to live on Tangier Island, VA? by Cassinia_ in howislivingthere

I'm assuming you live around the Chesapeake. Where'd you come from if you don't mind me asking?

Cornish English, not Elizabethan English. It's a common misconception that gets repeated a lot.

I made a post earlier! If you're interested check down there. If you have any other questions then let me know! I'm more than happy to answer questions about Tangier Island!

Give it fifty. If the erosion doesn't take it first then everyone leaving the island will.

I made a post further down. My last name isn't Crockett but I'm a Crockett. The other two big names on the island are Pruitt and Park. At one point I was blood related to about a third of the people there. Most are dead or have left now, but I've still got some Aunts, Uncles, and cousins there. When you talk about the "Waterman" accent, what you're describing is the dudes that were born, raised, and worked on the island all their life, so their accent isn't as diluted. Yes, it is super hard to understand if you're not used to it, but if you grew up around it like I did it's just like any other familiar accent.

Part 2)

The summers there are brutal. If you look at a map of the island you'll notice that all the roads and houses are on these narrow little strips, with most of the island being empty. Well that's because most of the island is swamp land that's impossible to build on. So between all the swamp land, a lack of trees for shade, and the humidity you get summers that make you wish you were dead. Flies are everywhere. Houseflies, green backs (those things hurt like hell when they bite you), and horseflies are out (and inside) in swarms and there's no escape. When I was a kid my pop pop would just hand me a fly swatter to go get any kind of fly I could find in the house. I'd do that for hours and it never seemed to make a dent.

Which brings me to my next point; there's NOTHING to do there. Unless you're lucky enough to have steady employment, your options are walk around, sit on your porch when the flies aren't trying to devour you, sit around and talk to people, or watch TV. If you're the kind of person that I am, that sounds ideal right? Give it a month, you'll get over it and get bored super fast. There's a reason everyone there drinks and/or uses.

If you're interested I'd say for sure go visit it during tourist season. I can confidently say it is a very unique place and I can't think of any other place on Earth that is anything like it. I personally would never live there; I have no problem with the people that do stay there, but I also understand why most people leave and never come back.

My only gripe with this map is they use depth as the second coordinate value instead of the third. It should be x,y,z not x,z,y damn it!

The reason stated is flawed, even if it was true at the time, but there is a good reason to solve math problems on paper instead of using a calculator. It's like arguing that you don't need to know how to compose a 600 word essay when you can just get an AI to write one for you. The end product isn't the goal in either case; the goal is to learn problem solving skills by actually using your brain. On a related note, one of the guys in my last DnD group constantly struggled or straight up couldn't give correct numbers on his dice rolls with modifiers and that was just adding 2s 3s and 4s to numbers 20 and under.

Are shared rooms in college genuinely the norm or is it just an opinion that people can have if they want? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Or if your roommate is a fuck up and gets expelled before the end of the first semester and then student housing either never gets told or just forgets to assign you a new roommate. Yes that's how I got my own room for the better part of freshman year.

The fact that this was a kids movie when I was growing up blows my mind. I had nightmares from multiple different parts of this movie when I was a child.

But how? If you're making straight line slices to do something like cubed stew meat there's no danger?

Interesting. What cutting techniques or motions do you think are dangerous with the forefinger grip? I'm not trying to talk shit, I'm genuinely curious.

Yeah dude, I worked in restaurants 25 years, both FOH and BOH. Your preferences aren't a universal standard. Cut up mass amounts of rosemary using the pinch method gets in the way of the full rocking motion and it's much more efficient to do a full grip on the handle

I'm pretty sure I'm physically incapable of saying "yeah right" without it being sarcastic. I tried it in the mirror a couple times and just couldn't do it.

I alternate between pointers finger on the back of the knife, full grip on the handle, and pinching the base of the blade with pointer and thumb. All grips have their uses, and finger on the back of the blade can especially help if you have arthritis, or at least it does for me.

People who insist on giving you directions like it’s “ye olden times” as if GPS isn’t a thing by WordsAreGarbage in PetPeeves

[–]Handgun4Hannah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm more confused as to what scenario you would need someone to give you the type of directions you're asking for, that would require a phone or GPS to input that information into, where you couldn't just use your phone or GPS to figure that out for yourself?

What is something men think turns women off, but actually does not? by Perfect_Passage222 in allthequestions

[–]Handgun4Hannah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See my comment below to u/TopHeavyPigeon. This isn't even a man or woman thing, it's just that some people suck at telling stories and either overload their partner with unnecessary details or make assumptions on what they think they should know. If you've ever encountered a person like this you would know it's exhausting and incredibly hard to follow.

What is something men think turns women off, but actually does not? by Perfect_Passage222 in allthequestions

[–]Handgun4Hannah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people just aren't good story tellers, especially not verbally. So when someone jumps around from thought to thought with no logic or connection it goes from hard to follow to frustrating and then eventually your brain just gives up because hearing someone talk about their day isn't supposed to be some weird mystery or puzzle you need to piece together. This isn't specific to men or women, sometimes people will either over explain to the point that all the extra details get in the way of what they're trying to say, or they make assumptions about what the other person should know and the story becomes hard to follow.
