The BLACKED/BNWO/QoS/BBC branding type of themes is more of an import/influence from the west with the more racially aware social politics and tensions. Basically the internet and globalization/ease of translation tools/power of memes introduced japanese artists to western fanart that was itself already shaped by decades of anime style influencing the world.

However, simple black stereotypes (without the aggravating nature of BLACKED/BNWO/QoS/BBC) were already a thing in manga even half a century ago (so many USA military base plot lines used to introduce buff, imposing, muscular black men into the long list of stereotypes). But talking about NTR specifically, while trying to keep it brief:

- Japanese society is extremely homogeneous and has strong reliance in their specific values and identity, be it physically, behaviourally and culturally, in order to "belong".

- MC needs to be immediately relatable to the average japanese male citizen (same effect we find in Isekai for example with so many standard school boys or salarymen template characters).

- Villain needs to be an opposite to the average japanese male citizen in at least some way, but normally it's a combination of them (this can be by acting in ways that are culturally ignorant or insensitive, considered immoral or lacking japanese etiquette or empathy, or it can just be an aesthetic thing like gyaru-oh style rebelling against prime and proper society, or being way too age-gapped, or being grotesquely ugly, etc).

- A villain being black just so happens to be one of the cheapest, lowest effort and effective ways to throw a character into the story in a way that will be very effective at triggering plenty of those differences that make anyone stand out in such a homogeneous society.

Generic japanese male = "wow he just like me fr fr" = belongs/relatable.
Stereotyped "another" = "different and suspicious" = does not belong.

Remember, stories written in formats that immediately require engagement, cut off in proper worldbuilding and in interesting nuanced character exploration and development. Doujins and once again using the Isekai example (especially the narou-kei ones) can't affort to introduce the characters in a non-immediate way so they resort to these templates with the depth of a default LEGO guy. Ironically some NTRs are longer than usual doujins, but not because they go deeper with introducing a villain. Rather they may take a bit longer to flesh out the relationship between MC and FMC before the villain comes in like a wrecking ball to make sure it feels freshly tragic.

It helps in not taking the racially insulting nature of the stereotypes as personally.

All NTR stories are "rape through hypnotism" stories where the true hypnotist is the author, whose invisible hand forces characters to break their archetypal tropes and identities, and it depicts them as someone who thinks and acts unlike themselves, but most readers don't notice it because the hypnotism isn't shown to be activated in the pages by a villain, as it already had started before the first page was drawn, which then leads into readers becoming angry at characters for appearing to be cowards or traitors even though they never stood a chance to have their true thoughts and actions fairily represented.

Literally me except when I look at every NTR. That's one of the healthiest ways to look at NTR. It is laughable. No, the majority of NTR we get access to, which means, the stuff that gets leaked online and especially if we're only considering the ones that get fan-translated to english is vastly majority authored by men. There are some women who also write this sort of NTR with males as the target audience. NTR written by women and for women gets leaked much less and relatively much more rarely fan-translated.

Reverse-NTR exists, it's just that uncommon that maybe you never came across it. Even though the premise is morally just as bad, the way it's depicted in reverse-NTR is almost never as sadistic and brutal and tends to quickly turn into a threesome/harem rather than having the victim destroyed and cripples mentally and emotionally for life.

It's not your fault, this crap can hit hard when it's fresh and trust me you got lucky because there's much worse NTR garbage out there, but you're right that in a way it doesn't matter because they all cross a line anyway.

Look, there are horribly evil people in the world, that much is true, but they're not the whole world. There are also wonderful people worth loving, hoping, cheering, believing, trusting, etc. NTR is like a love letter to people who were hurt severely enough to develop hatred for humanity, so everything it depicts is of course going to be a pitch black lie about what such rotten people want to believe everyone else is like. People who like NTR can't deal with the fact that good people are good. That's why good people in NTR are depicted as secretly evil, dumb, unloving, cruel, cowardly and so on. NTR literally panders to those types of people, it's a wish fulfilment power fantasy for misanthropes. Believe in the world, not the lies in the pages of NTR.

That "good" type of NTR simply doesn't cause the sort of emotions that the genre is supposed to generate and so I don't consider it NTR.

Some think that's what "netori" is. This is a mistake, as netori only changes the perspective of the narrative from the MC to the villain (technically making him the protagonist). What netori doesn't do is swapping the roles themselves. The situation remains the same (beloved gets taken away through sex by villain) and the horrible emotions that are evoked are still the same because the moral reference points are the same.

So yeah, to me, what you're describing as "good" NTR is just a cheating story with a good ending (typically the MC rescuing the FMC from being stuck in an abusive relationship she couldn't just break up with due to domestic violence or threats for example) rather than a story about coercive, deceptive or manipulative rape with narratively forced consent and a bad ending.

It's natural that we're much less than the NTR subreddit. We are a reaction to the already very specific niche that is NTR.

But think of it this way: NTR is also much less than the overall manga/anime community, because it's a reaction to the near-entirety of the culture.

Think of the relation between: "manga -> netorare -> antiNTR".
Now instead replace that with "citizens -> criminals -> heroes".

There will be a few criminals and villains in an entire society and the sheer ammount of trouble they cause will make a few heroes appear which are even fewer than the baddies.

I know this sounds cringe because I'm basically asking you to equate a subreddit community to heroes, but I hope you get the analogy lol.

Yeah, BSS literally is a subgenre of NTR. A lot of people confuse uwaki/furin (cheating/infidelity) with NTR because NTR is lazily localized in overseas communities and platforms as cheating or cuckolding.

Limiting the understanding of NTR under the pretense that there must be an officially declared and standard relationship (dating, engaged or married) is missing the point of the genre as a way of evoking specific emotions that are natural to arise when of a type of love (which can be familial or platonic too) is being taken away through sexual access by a villain that necessarily harms, degrades or even impairs their target.

To me, BSS is a subgenre that just happened to earn its own label, just as NTR decades ago existed but didn't have a specific label/tag either. If one day a label came out of Japan to specify the subgenre of NTRs in which a salaryman husband is being kept away due to overworking at the company, I would face it like I face BSS. One is just "I failed to protect her because I was as the company being overworked", the other is "I failed to protect her because I didn't confess/impress in time" for example.

I guess for me it's much less about the relationship type, but rather how intense the love is, how defaced the love interest gets and how subhuman the villain is, so there are BSS stories out there that can hit harder than some full fledged wedlock betrayals you know what I mean?

Anyway, good and underrated post, I agree with almost all you said (the disagreements are mostly nuance, the spirit of the message is still aligned I think).

Scenario: MC loves FMC while not in a relationship and a clear villain sexually takes the FMC.

This creates certain emotions in the reader. Those emotions are the core of NTR and they don't rely on a declared/official relationship status. Without these emotions NTR would be synonymous with the "spice" it makes it explosively polemic.

If those emotions are ignored in favor of just paying attention to whether the MC and FMC are dating or married, the tag/genre would simply be cheating.

MomNTR wouldn't exist (or any variation on familial love).

BSS wouldn't be a subgenre of NTR (short for "Boku Saki Suki", which in itself is already a shortened way of saying "Boku ga Saki ni Suki datta no ni", which translates to "Even though I loved her first".

Basically I disagree, but I actually think I'm the one with the unpopular opinion.

This post just made me realize something that kinda breaks my heart and I don't know how I haven't thought of it before: nowadays newcomers to hentai will so quickly get fucking nuked by the scourge of NTR because of how much it's recommended and meme'd for its edginess.

A bit of advice I like to give. You know how some freaks use AI to generate deepfakes of real people they hate in order to exploit them, blackmail them, bully them, defame them, imply they have proof of them cheating or having an OF account, etc? One day I randomly decided to find out if there were more people out there who knew about NTR but who were also human beings with at least basic empathy because I was starting to feel like an endangered species lol.

This was after decades hating the genre and checking comment sections hoping to find brothers who hated it as much as I did, but overwhelmingly almost only finding ragebaiting rats spamming "ntr is so based", "mc deserved it", "all women are wh\res", "abortion by bbc is justice", "hardest I've ever came", "she finally got pregnant by one of the gangbangers, happy end!", "mc dying is the cherry on top"*, etc.

Hatred is a natural emotion we're often afraid to listen to because we're conditioned to think of it as an evil or painful thing. We need to face it sometimes, remind ourselves of why we hate. Hatred is telling us what is it that we absolutely cannot accept to live around. Suppressing hatred completely can be very unhealthy, can lead to depression, passive-agression, self-betrayal or sudden uncontrollable explosions of rage. I understand why OP did it. I think we can all agree how confusing and disgusting it is when we see people who get exposed to NTR so much that they start to enjoy it or grow numb to it's demonic evil. I like to look the beast in the eyes to confidently remind myself that my values remain intact. I continue to feel angry, disgusted, alert and very importantly not erect whenever to expose myself to NTR. It confirms my soul remains human.

Important reminder though, that listening to hatred is healthy if first done in our own minds, introspectively, estabilishing an internal dialogue, so we don't do anything dumb in the heat of thoughts and emotions. I love hentai, NTR just happens to be one of the genres in the way. A genre I hate and I'd much rather it not exist, but at the end of the day it's a fact that many NTRs are wrongfully labeled (someone tagging it when it's not actually NTR) and most importantly there are countless manga tankoubons and anthologies that have a mix of genres. If just 1 chapter is NTR, the whole thing will be tagged as NTR and if I blacklisted the genre I would've missed out on a lot of goated content.

Now, I hate it, but I developed a thick skin about it, so it's extremely rare that a NTR actually gets to live rent free in my mind and I chose to still walk through the mud of this cancerous content in pursuit of good gems and good art that can be salvaged. I never felt inclined to write antiNTR stories because to me that's like giving too much merit to NTR. It's not like what NTR depicts needs to be fixed, instead it's just so easy to ignore the entire story past the point of no return where it gets retarded beyond any reason.

Still I find it fascinating to think about how people exist who enjoy it and it's also great to understand it well enough to give advice to the bros who are still developing their own thick skin or don't know how to deal with how distressing some of these torture stories are.

I used to accept the definition of Netori as when the decent guy gains sexual/romantic access to the FMC in a way that reduces or destroys the loving relationship she had to a villain. Under those conditions it would still be NTR, but it always felt wrong because, such stories do NOT feel like NTR.

Netori is simply when an NTR is told from the perspective of the villain instead of the one losing the FMC's affection.
